my 1998 kdx 200 has oil seeping onto the garage floor from behind the front sprocket. when the sprocket pressed on, it appears that oil pushes out. it is dripping onto the chain then onto the floor. my father in law thinks i have a bad countershaft seal. is this correct? what should i be doing to fix this? i also searched the forum to no avail....thanks in advance.

I am going thru this right now as well. You will most likely need, 1 countershaft seal, 1 wear / spacer sleeve, 2 o rings, and it won't hurt to get a new snap ring for the sprocket while your at it.

Yeah. There is a great how to over on thumper talk I just found. I'll throw up a link when I get home. It's got pics and all. Glad to see I am not alone.

Its easy as pie to do. Turn off the gas and lay it down on the right side and you don't even need to drain the trans fluid.

You dont even need to lay it down, just lean it over to the right side on a wall.

Do I need any special tools? And where is the best place to order the seals and everything from?

Any chance of a link? My 220 just started seeping from the output shaft

Pull the chain, pull the front sprocket, remove collar, then seal, then o-rings. Grease shaft ( ) slide on 2 new Orings, seat seal. Install new collar, sprocket, clip, and chain.

20 minutes max.

the oil seal can be a headache if you do not have the proper tools (seal pryer) for the job. else everything else is a breeze. dont even need to remove chain for the job. just loosen the rear axle, slacken the chain and you should be able to remove the front sprocket.

Why should this be a headache ?

Just drive a screw in and pull on the screw, voila your seal has left the casing..

Done this over a hundred times and never has this gone wrong, just be carefull that you don't force the screw into the bearing.

is it those self tapping screw? any size recommended? what do you uae to pull on the screw? self grip wrench? how many screws to use? thanks for sharing.

In the Fall, I got sick of the leaking, and replaced the countershaft o-ring and the seal. And it held for 6+ months. Well it started leaking AGAIN this Summer.

So this time I replaced the (2) O-rings, the seal, the bushing, and the sprocket clip. Getting the sprocket clip on was not fun. I then test rode the bike, the leak stopped, and I parked the bike ... then it started leaking again a few days later. Very frustrated.

Also, I checked my chain tension and it was within specification and not too tight.

Are both O-rings supposed to go into the recess on the bushing???

Yea. Both O rings seat into there. Is it leaking from between the collar and oil seal? Or through the O rings inside the collar?
