Clutch question

I recently bought a 2002 CR 125 and it has what I'd like to call the all-or-nothing clutch, 'cause I slowly let off the clutch and nothing happens, and then it grabs pretty hard at about halfway out. It gets annoying when taking off from a stop or when trail riding and I have to feather the crap out of it to get the bike rolling. Are all CR 125's of this model like this? Or will I need to inspect the plates/basket/springs? My friends KDX has the same problem

I'd be willing to bet you need a new basket and boss.

Kind of the wrong forum to ask on, don't you think? We are a very small group and I'm sure not many of us have first hand knowledge of those particular bikes. You might try posting this same question over on TT.

I was thinking the same thing, I figured that the clutch on this bike shouldn't be too different than a KDX's. Im not very familiar with clutch mechanisms  but my buddy's KDX is having the same problem

Do you think it will help if I filed down the fingers if it's worn?

Yeah, probably worn basket. The RM's i've ridden are the only bikes that defintely have an on/off clutch even when everything is in top shape. All the CR's I've ridden had quite nice clutch action. Of course, I think the newest cr 125 I've been on was a 96.... Maybe they changed somethin.

If the basket's notched out, you CAN file down the grooves to a certain degree, but you'll be back in there tearing it apart a few rides later. Best bet is fixing it right the first time.
Don't know about how much material you can remove from the basket before it's shot, some MFGs list it in their service manuals- anyone know the tolerances for the KDX?

It probably has worn parts. Basket/Hub.

Or...

Maybe it has an aftermarket clutch kit? :hmm:

I have a Barnett clutch in my KX and it is very on/off.

do y'all think stiffer springs could do this?

I've filed a couple baskets with good results. My buddies YZ250 had the light switch clutch action going on and it had shark teeth on the basket and the boss was heavily grooved. Unless you know something I don't, you don't fix the boss, you buy a new one. Hopefully you won't have all that wrong.

That would just give you harder clutch pull and stronger engagement. You should still be able to feather it.
