The HP will waste your money a bit faster than the Pennzoil. Your transmission will shift worse with either one (in comparison to regular old 10w-40). JMO, based on my own experimentation with each.

My old F11 loves the honda HP oil for some reason. Ran it in my KDX for a whlie, but the KDX likes ATF much better. Don't be afraid to play around with many different gearbox oils. The biggest thing you will notice is different clutch/shifting feel. Pick what seems to work best in your bike and run it. Just stay away from oils with friction modifiers in them.

I ran gl-5 gear oil in my vw tranny and it was hell on the syncromesh. I switched to a gm syncro trans fluid also gl-5 and it was night and day.
So to answer, additives

My current H series KDX seems to like regular 10w-40 best. Even with that, it only shifts well for one or 2 rides, then it starts getting very notchy.

Here is a thread from 2009 that has some good info.
http://www.kdxrider.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7241

canyncarvr suggest:
You referred to it maybe being 'too thick'.

Gear oil specs are not the same as motor oil specs. Some think that a gear oil rated at 80W is somehow twice as thick as 40W motor oil.

It's not.

Quote:
API viscosity ratings for gear oils are not directly comparable with those for motor oil, and they are thinner than the figures suggest. For example, many modern gearboxes use a 75W90 gear oil, which is actually of equivalent viscosity to a 10W40 motor oil.

From HERE!

HERE is the article he is referring to:
