Sorry I don't know the voltage of the pre-'89 bikes. I know that '89+ are 12v.

it'll work but won't be as bright if it's only throwing out 6v

Check the voltage with the bike revved up. Bikes haven't commonly been 6 volts for a long time, but it is possible.
Check with someplace like Ricky Stator. He should be able to set you up with an upgraded stator and voltage regulator to let you run 12V bulbs for more light.
A cheaper solution would be to figure out the voltage regulator yourself and change to a 12 V one. I don't know if your lighting coil would be AC or DC. The stock coil may not make good light with a 12V bulb, which could be why it was 6V.
12v

Your system should be 12v. Go to rickystator.com or bajadesign.com to find a lighting stator. You need at least 75w to get effective lights. You also need to convert AC to DC by putting in a voltage regulator, which you can get from Ricky also. Once you do all that you might as well hook up a nicad 12v battery which your system will be able to charge once you do the above. Or you can go to Baja and order the high priced street kit which come with everything. You could also go to Rockymountainmc.com and buy a tusk sytem which will require some savy to connect to a charging system. There are all the options I have found. Good luck and don't burn your system up!

He doesn't need to convert to DC to get higher output, just a higher output lighting stator.
