I haven't been on the site long and have a very limited understanding of kdx's compared to all other air cooled 2 strokes but was just told yesterday by my local old school kawasaki dealer here in chattanooga that the crank is lubricated by GEAR BOX OIL.

He continued that the crank case is not sealed from the gear box and that the two stroke oil only lubricates the cylinder wall while the connecting rod bearings are lubricated by gear oil.

"If yer usin premix to ol yer crank yer bout to be in a worl of hurt boy."

I assumed he was right and asked what keeps the oil from going through the transfers?

What good are crank seals?

What keeps it from having an major air leak?

I told him he was thinking of 4 strokes and mine is a two stroke. He said I needed to do my homework and didn't want to talk about it any more.

Please tell me I'm not crazy

He's absolutely wrong. There is no gearbox oil in your crankcase, period.

read what he's saying guys... premix oil into the gasoline which lubricates the piston and gear oil into the bottom end. Other than incorrectly calling 10W40 oil gear oil, he's essentially correct - you don't put 2-stroke premix oil into the bottom end...

Wrong. The crankcase is sealed from the trans. Trans oil does not lube the rod bearings or crank bearings. They are lubed by the oil in your premix. (BTW, one of the many reasons I prefer a 32:1 gas/oil mix) Look at the pic below. This of my KDX200's left engine case. You will notice that the crank area is completely sealed from the trans area.

I was a little suspicious a few months back when he told me the absolute best premix oil to use is kawasaki which is semi synthetic instead of like motul 800 or other fully syn.

and no. he will never touch my bike. I've been building motorcycle engines for about 15 years so everything but secret rb mods and nicasil I can handle.

I think this has already been sufficiently cleared up, but it seems you are thinking of the transmission as the "bottom end". That is not the case. The bottom end consists of the main bearings, crank, and big end bearing, and is sealed off from the trans. If you're getting transmission oil in the bottom end, there's a leak in the case halves or RH main seal.

The majority of people who work at dealerships are dumb as f*#$. I can't believe how many times I've been told ridiculous misinformation by local dealers.

Just think.......That goon probably gets paid to work on people's machines. Thats is a pretty scary thought!

The worst part is that the dealership is named after him. He is the owner!
