I know this topic is
but is it worth making a hybrid? I am in sort of a pinch between out right buying a 250 2t, or a 125 for a hybrid build. The KDX rides nice, but I would like more of an aggressive feel to it rather than it riding like a couch. I've only been riding a few times now, but I think its time to move up a bit, and I would like to start riding some track as well:
What do you guys personally think?

Sounds like a hybrid might be exactly what you are looking for. With common KDX engine mods and a KX125 chassis you can go track riding with no problem. Just don't try doing any Supercross! The 250 would be more track capable yet would be heavier and less trail friendly.
I had a 250 for a while and didn't like it in the woods. As things got tighter, the worse the 250 was. The bike had a lot of power and when it hit, it was a bit too much and would just result in wheelspin. I'm sure a gearing change would have helped some.
I think the biggest problem with using an MX bike in the woods is the transmission gear ratios. For me, the gear spacing of an MX bike in the woods results in a lot of shifting. Some of which happens at the worst possible time.
Everything about the KDX engine makes it well suited for the woods.
The best thing is to try to borrow a 250 and see what you think. it might be perfect for your riding style and terrain.
Alright, I am going to check out a 2000 cr250 either today or tomorrow. A hybrid at this point is still doable, and I have located a few options. It probably doesn't help that I am 5'10 and weigh 200lbs.
I'm in the same exact boat as you. love my kdx except for the handling/suspension. I probably should have started a thread like this first, but I like building things, so I just went ahead and did a hybrid. It should be done pretty soon.
I have a buddy who has a 2002 cr250 and he trail rides it all over the place. He's an incredible rider though.
i am in the same boat as you gents. i love the kdx to death, always starts and pulls like a mother! but i ride a lot of track and gravel roads once a month. at times il venture into the deep woods with mu kdx and its fantastic. but alas i HATE the suspension for mx
i contenplated the idea of a hybrid but the resale value is too low + its alot of work. so i went out and bought a kx250 in 10 boxes for $1200 and lots and lots of racing mods :P took me 2 days to put together and i fu*king love it at the track! i took it trough the small trail there and it was fine, nothing too great nothing too bad.
il have to see how the 250 is in the woods next time im up north
1995 kdx 200 my baby
1986 klr 250
1989 yamaha blaster 200 just like the kdx
1983 kl 250 bought the thing for $100 it wont die
Well I just got done with my hybrid build. 97 kx125 chassis 99 kdx 200 motor, fmf woods pipe, fmf turbine core muffler, rb head, rb carb, stock gearing for a little more speed if I wanna ride on a motorcross track. I have had 125's and 250 2t's for years and I have to say I love my hybrid with the rb mods sooo much more than either. Way faster than the 125's everywhere. feels kinda like a 250 but with a way smoother power band. This bike is a fun motorcross bike that is awsome to ride in the woods. In my opinion and i know alot of other's on here would agree, the hybrid with the rb mods is definitely best of both worlds!!! Its a "can do it all" bike.
I love my hybrid. I haven't ridden a ton of MX bikes, but it's got everything I love about the MX bike, and everything I love about the KDX. It's noticably lighter and the handling is just amazing ('02 CR125 frame). I've only tried about 10 different bikes offroad, but so far it's by far my favorite. I'm very glad I built mine. No regrets.

I spend quite a bit of time in the woods on an older yz250. Very fun bike. The hit can be brutal though on the wrong trail at the wrong time. A FWW took care of that nicely. Very versatile bike. Enjoy it!
