I'm picking up a 2000 YZ250 for $400 tomorrow.

The bike is complete with GPR steering stabilizer, two tanks, large one and stock also. Extra moose seat, bark busters, FMF pipe and silencer. The only thing missing is the fenders. It is stuck in gear but it does have good compression and the bike was running two years ago when it was parked. I do not have the time to fix this bike.

I plan to pull the motor & investigate the trans after the Hatfield-McCoy ride in May. If it'd be a fairly cheap repair, I'll grab the other needed parts & add another bike to the stable... or sell at a profit. If it looks like an expensive fix, I've got the idea to fit the entire front end to my '00 KDX220 & part out the rest of the bike. (Or possibly contemplate a hybrid with a KDX250 engine!)
Anyway, I've searched but not seeing where too many folks have used YZ forks... much less the complete front end. I'm thinking this would just involve the steering stem for the most part. Maybe steering stop tweaks. Advice anyone?

If none of the above pans out I intend to make out like a bandit on the part-out in order to fund a future KX front end conversion.

I'm pretty sure juliend has YZ forks on his KDX.

Yeah, I'm running an earlier model yz250 front end. 43mm KYB's, so 93-95. I think mine are 93's. Went on without much trouble. Steering stem swap and a bushing for the upper triple. I actually got an aftermarket top triple on ebay for a 95 which had a smaller hole for the stem than the 93 triple. You'll just have to see what the triples look like when you get it, but it should be a fairly easy swap.

Sounds like a great deal, score 1 for you! If possible, I'd fix the bike. That's a great deal for a 2000 yz.

I picked up a "parts" kx250 for about $300, stole the forks and parted the rest to get a fork swap that I made money on. It took a while to find it but the deals are out there!

Looks like I'll be doing the same as rbates9. This bike looks like it was stored with the rear end hanging out of a small shed & is not my idea of a fixer upper. Lot's of rust & neglect. I was gonna pass on it but the guy dropped the price to be rid of it. I'll still come out to the good on the part out & keep the front end.
In this first image you'll see what's wrong in the transmission.


After some thorough cleanup, new spokes & fork rebuild I think the front end might serve my purpose eventually. The upper triples appear to be made by Tag. Not sure about the lowers but they look oem'ish to me.

That stabilizer (new) costs more than what you paid for the bike. Would be nice to know what valving is in the forks. I have pro-action woods-valved forks on my YZ/WR, and they are sweet.

Which was a VERY big factor in my decision to purchase.

I wouldn't mind finding deals like that just so I can break the things down and maybe get some education out of them, part them out, make a little $$, and start on the next find.

It will surprise you what people will pay top dollar for and what you can't give away. The parts bike I had came with a Boysen flywheel cover and they bid that up to just about what a new one would have cost!
