Reed valve question

I bought a used 2003 KDX 220. I am installing new top end, replating cylinder. I took the reed assembly out and it does not look like the diagram on kawasaki website. My reed does not have 3 "fingers" it is 1 solid piece. Also has another reed under it like a two stage??? Anyone have an idea what I have? I want to replace the reeds but not sure if I can put boyesen super stock on this or not?? There are no reed limiters either. Thanks

Check out free image hosting sites like Imageshack, Photobucket, etc.
You'll find everything you need to know at those places.

Thanks for the help. I am convinced I have a stock reed cage with Boyesen power reeds. The Boyesen web site only lists the pro series for this bike, did they discontinue the power series? I need to replace these as they are warped. Should I replace with Boyesen pro series or Boyesen super stock? Is it ok to use super stock without the reed limiter?

Boyesen dual stage power reeds. The ones you want are #607.

You really think they add $100 worth of performance over the 607's? I remain skeptical.

Bang for the buck, the 607 reeds are great!

Well to be honest I can't say if it's worth the extra hundred in there or not.
I have never used the 607's.
When I put my VF3 in my bike I was replacing the original reeds and
everyone on here said the VF3 was the way to go but the 607's were
the next best thing.

What is your basis for comparison? Stock cage w stock reeds, stock cage with boyesens? Was this setup on the the bike when you got it?

I can say that my stock cage with power reeds provides excellent results, but that means nothing to you if I don't tell you that it was an improemvent over stock. Even then, neither you nor I know how much improvement there was. It was enough for me to doubt that a VF3 or Radvalve was worth the $150 bucks. On another model of bike, tests actually show a bike with VF3 installed producing LESS HP than the stock setup. However, the throttle response at low end was purportedly so much improved that the loss of HP didn't matter.

All I can say is, if a $30 set of boyesen reeds makes THAT much difference, a VF3 or Rad Vavle better be a tremendous improvement for me to spend $150 on it. This is why I have not, because everyone says it's better, but not by much. Seems there are more important things to spend the buck an a half on.

I went from 10 year old stock reeds to 607's and really didn't notice much if any difference. I have heard many people say the 607's have helped them a lot, but for me they were just another set of reeds. The stock reeds were lifting at the edges and after a few rides with the 607's they were too. Maybe my cage had issues but it appeared to be fine.
I installed the VF3 at the same time as getting my carb back from RBD so I can't say for sure how much difference the VF3 made but I am happy with the set up I have now. I might try the stock cage again someday but it won't be soon. I do like the thought of not having any screws to come loose and get in the cylinder, not that it happens a lot but it cant now.
As far as being worth the money, to each there own. Just about any part for a bike is over priced for what you are getting but it is some thing that you want to have not something that you need so you will pay more for it. Just my .02

my 220 was running a stock reed cage at first with boysen reeds (fmf gnarley pipe with power core 2 silencer)..the bike performed well in the mid range & right through ...i only decided to fit the rad valve because i was offered a new & boxed item for half the price so i thought well why not...anyway after fitting & sorting out the jetting i noticed the bike pulled much better down low & also in the mid range but did drop off a little towards the top... last year i split the rubber carb boot so while i waited for a new one to arrive i re fitted my standard reed cage & boot etc & noticed that the bike didnt have quite the hit that i had with the rad valve fitted ..so in my opinion the rad valve certainly made a difference in how the power was delivered down low compared to my original item albeit with boysen reeds fitted..is it worth the $$$ i guess thats up to the individual.
