Since it seems the factory splitter is a glorified one of these I decided to give it a try.Put some heat and penetrating oil on it to help ease it out.

It worked great!Hey do you think I might have to replace this main bearing?

You could always weld it..

I was told no by a welder at work.Don't think I'd trust that on a rim anyway.Should be able to source one here.Shipping a wheel is $$$.

My air box and carb are on the way .Had the local shop press out the rest of the crank and what was left of the bearing.Took in the wheel,he's going to look around his stash.Hoping he finds a rim or if I'm real lucky a whole wheel.A good week as I also got the wiring harrness for my 78 Suzuki GS1000

I got pics and questions but Photobucket's not cooperating so you will have to wait a bit Did go up to Kenco,they found me a brand new Exel rim someone ordered and didn't pick up.It's a 2.15 instead of the stock 1.85,I hope that won't be a problem
BTW tried PB 3 times,can't get it to go

That size difference shouldn't matter. The newer bikes have the 2.15" wheel.

Got the crank stripped,finally.The othere bearing stayed on the crank,got a bearing separator and pulled it off.

But the nut at the end of the crank was as you can see badly stripped Now the question.Make a spacer to bridge the gap?Or weld it up and retap for an easier to find nut?


The gap and how far the clutch nut will go on to the existing threads.

I finally got the tires off the rims,actually the front was off a while ago.The rear on fought like a demon ,took 4 days to get the stupid thing off.Old and hard!In that time I got a good look at the rim,along with the pulled spokes there are at least 4 nasty cracks.All the spoke nipples have been soaking in penetrating oil for 2 days and will get another shot today.Then 1 more in a couple of days.The thing I've learned is stuff like this can't be rushed.
After much head scratching I think it might be time get a "new" crank.

My crank was all buggered up when I got the bike. When rebuilding, I had them re-tap the end a size smaller. I've had no trouble, so I'd recommend that route for sure. I wouldn't feel comfortable with a spacer or washers in there and the nut only on the last few threads. Also, threadlock the hell outta that one!

Thanks Julian,have gotten the same advice 3 times.I'm iffy on whether I should save this crank or get a "new" one.Some PO sucked up some water into the case and left it there.I'm going to start a thread in Q&A about it.

Hey I think I read the the 89+ cranks will fit the C models, can anyone confirm this?

I was going to wait a bit but last night I gave the spoke nipples a try.Not one broken or stripped out nipple A good penetrating oil+ time is your friend working on these old beasts.

Soda blast that hub and you will think it's new!

Yeah soda would work but I got a bag of ground walnut shells.Was going to use them for the frame but it seems they are better for aluminium than steel so I want to give them a try on the hub.

Yeah, walnut shells should do a good job. I have been messing with soda blasting the parts during my hybrid build and it works ok on hard, non-rust deposits, but you definitely have to scrub off any soft stuff or it just sticks to it and makes a mess. I have some glass bead media, but will be interested to hear how the walnut shells work.

Me to buffster,soda blasted my 78 GS1000 engine before painting it.Worked real nice,I use washing soda from the laundry aisle at the grocery store.A lot more gritty than baking soda,haven't found a place locally that sells blasting soda.
In other news my waffling on the crank issue has been solved by The Boss.We where up at Kenco and we (she) ordered a new rod kit.Got a set of main bearings at the closest bearing place,much less than getting them though MC specialty places.While we where at Kenco we also picked out all my dirt bike riding gear.As I've been street only till this time I need everything.Had them put it away so The Boss can pay it off.
Speaking of the 1000 I really got to get going on that to.
