yep it's different from my 89 but I'm not sure if it's stock for the 88. I don't think it was but I could easily be wrong. I like yours better anyway

I have no idea lol. I think its stock. Gotta be if u ask me. The only thing aftermarket is the pipe from what i can see (slip on). I want to put some pro taper clamps on it and use the pro taper bars and some hand guards

Very nice job on the 88. We've had ours in the family since 1990. Our 88 still runs like a top, hope to keep it going for another 24 years.

I'm running a DG pipe and silencer on ours. The DG pipe really wakes the C models up a lot. I had the DG on my 86 also. I've seen them for sale on Ebay, used and new.

Keep up the great work.

So i found another kdx and i think im gonna start a restore on it as well but first i want to get it running. Got it for free and all it needs is a piston kit and something with the power valve. Not sure whats missing tho i will be getting it on the weekend. Does anyone know much about the 89's? Its my first liquid cooled dirt bike and dont know much about this year. It comes with a full fmf set and from what i know its stock other then that

Awesome, That's a pretty good e-series. Stickers are still visible on the swingarm. It's a super fun bike. Interested how it compares to the air cooled you have.
I have an 89 too.

ok, so i took the motor out of the bike.. i got it on my bench and tried to turn the motor over by hand using the connecting rod to trn the crank over, but i cant get all the way around with it.. it seems to be binding up 3/4 way around and locking up.. i think the guy who had it before must of blew it, and as he was taking it apart must of dropped something in the crank case, now its f******... can anyone suggest to me what i should do? i didnt pay anything for the bike.. so i cant say i have anything into it yet, but it has potential to me. should i try to find another motor or is it worth having it looked at by a mechanic and see if they can fix it? what am i looking at here to have it fixed? so far it needs a topend(150..00) and 100.00 worth of powervalve parts.. and now the bottom end... what should i do? please help

i would take that motor, put it on the bench upside down and do a few back-n-forths with the crank
(maybe pull the flywheel cover off so you can use that to turn it)

like you said, he may have dropped something in there and if we can find out what it is and how it looks like we might be able to get a better idea of the extend of the damage

Thanks. I have a feeling thats what happend cause there are parts missing for the power valve that go into the head/ cylinder and im pretty sure thats what it is. I wont know till i get in there or get lucky and do like u said and flip the case over and hopefully it falls out.

Got myself another project.. Picked up a 88 kx 250 for free as well. It ran when parked has some upgrades too. I got alot of projects goig right now but i just cant pass up these deals

So i bit the bullet and brought my bottom end into the shop to have it looked at and fixed. I will update when i know more. I looked down in there and noticed there was alot of small metal chunks so i hope that it dodnt damage anything. If it did what could be the worst that could have happened? Anyone have any thoughts?

Just needed a crank would be the worst possible or new cases. I can't imagine to much more could have happened. honestly it could just be a bad bearing which should not be to bad, some shops like to charge a lot for stuff like that, but doing it yourself while time consuming it really is not to bad, I used a harbor freight puller and got my bearings off easy as pie, if you dont count be thinking i was going to lose an eye  . I see your in vermont, I live near hudson nh its probably a little to far for you but, I frequent hudson cycle and they are the best shop i have ever done business with, for example I got a top end bored for $65 bucks and honed and the ring gap set, and they did it all in 24 hours.

Ya i brought the bottom end and top end in ans the guy said it shouldt be too bad since the pieces are so small. He asked me if i wNted the too end bored out. I heard mixed things about boring. Is it good or bad? I have been told that it can cause problems later down the road?

edit: sorry i was staring at the 89 pictures yeah the 88' should be good to bore I believe they are just steel somebody else will know dont take my word for it. Try to stay as small with the bore as possible is my only advice.

by shizcol
Really why is that? The cylinder looks great so i dont nees to bore. But the mechanic said he does it and i was wondering of its worth it

well a cylinder bore imo some may argue is really only for if the cylinder is worn beyond spec or damaged. a .2 over bore isn't going to do much. some will argue that they feel a difference but i never have. now if your talking a bore like 200 to a 220 then that is a different situation in terms of power etc. but your average bore is not going to do much the reason to stay as small as possible is that eventually you will need a new sleeve as they only make four piston sizes i believe. so say you go only to the next size up bore then you have two more bores left before you need to either re sleeve the cylinder or purchase a new one.

Hope that made sense.
