What do you get out of the snorkel? I have seen a KTM 300 with one and could not notice any difference from a stock KTM 300 or the piped KTM 300 that I ride with.

It makes a difference, but it is hard to hear while riding the bike. I had my wife stand out on our porch as I rode into the woods, and she said that it definately quiets the bike down significantly.

Any power difference? How dose it hold up to crashes and abuse?

You know what? How would you like one? For free. I have 2, and I would rather give one to someone who will use it, than leave it sitting on my shelf. If you are interested, please e-mail me at: gplassmann@yahoo.com

rbates9,

Those tire look awesome! Just what I am looking for. I have a couple of questions though. How are they in the corners? Are you running tubeless tires with those tapcons? Also, what type of nuts did you put on those tapcon screws and what was the length of the screws?

Thanks,
Sthutch

Those are my tires.
1) How are they in corners? - They corner just fine as long as you are in the snow. Get on pavement and they are a bit squirrely.
2)Are you running tubless tires? - Nope. I run Bridgestone Ultra Heavy Duty tubes with no other protection. Just make sure that you get "Flat Head" Tapcons, not "Hex Head" ones.
3)What type of nuts did you use? - I used speed nuts, but when I build another tire, I will use 1/4-20 jam nuts. The speed nuts come loose after a bit.
4)What is the length of the screws? - I used 1/4" x 1 1/4" Tapcons. All of the information can be found here:

This tire is on it's 2nd year. I do expect to throw it away after this season.
Also, I just run Cold Cutter screws up front, but the Tapcons can be used there as well.

Sorry about the mix up. Thanks for the link, your reply and the photos cover all the bases! I am going to give it a try. I will post the results when it is done.

I have a few spare older knobbies that I have thought about trying either screws or the Tapcons on. I just never seem to even have the extra $$ to be the stuff.

Do you need the stock silencer to use it?

Posted: 08:10 pm Jan 01 2011
by gregp
No. It fits pretty much any 2-stroke silencer. The whole thing is made of some kind of rubber-like material.
Let me know if you want it, and I will mail it to you...just e-mail me your name and mailing address.

I got my rear tire all done. I used about 250-275 tapcons with 1/2" jam nuts. The process went well, but wasn't able to ride as I am still waiting on my cylinder.

I did make it to the winter hare scramble and saw how they worked on a couple of bikes. They riders both reported that the hookup was truly awesome! The conditions, mid-20's with only 1"-2" inches of snow resulted in the snow being worn down to the dirt after a couple to three laps. The course was 3.7 miles with about 7-8 laps done by each rider (about 30 riders). The more experienced rider (on a '11 KTM150) wore the center 3-4 tapcons about 1/3 to 1/2 off. He easily had more traction than anyone else out there. He said that the performance was so good that it is worth replacing the worn studs for the next race in February.

gregp, Thanks for such a useful tip. Next to the Shim stack mod, this one is right up there! Josh was e-mailing you about these. He did well today. I believe this was only his second race (the Jackpine Enduro was his first). He and all who saw those tapcons in action became true believers.

No problem, Sthutch. I just was never able to bring myself to spend $500 or more on a set of rally spiked tires. Heck, I have bought whole bikes for that much!
From what I have been told, the Tapcons are not legal for some racing organizations (NETRA), but I don't really race in the winter.
They hold up well, and grip even when they are more than 1/2 gone. They are not as durable as carbide spikes, but I have seen grown men cry when they see snapped carbides on a new set of tires. As you mentioned, with the Tapcons, you can just replace them...
Go easy on the rocks, and they hold up pretty good.

Hmm spiked tires  Yes they cost a fortune but they last 10 years if you don't panic. Trelleborg, genuine one. especially.

That picture is showing $75 worth of studs, and that is not even a quarter of the tire. I wish I had your money, I would throw mine away!
