Grenade ?
If it snags a ring in that port do you really think its going to explode ?
One day, hopefully sooner than later, AdamN is going to ride that KDX with the funny 86 piston. I was beginning to think that he might do it while we are still able bodied but my hope is slowly fading.
Have you got a nikasil cylinder or sleeved? I got my sleeved cylinder out today and have to take a look at the nikasil one I have to take off a spare motor before I see which way I will be going with my next one.
If you're trying to keep an old bike running for occasional use, there's always the option of a thou or two coating on your old piston skirts to take up some clearance.
If you've got a sleeved barrel a light hone to square things up a bit (but not too far as to impact ring end gap) with a coated piston to get your clearance right and away you go
This one is for an '87. Easy enough to get a piston for but l dont mind trying out new things for future reference. Its a rough one but coated and cylinder honed to suit it feels ok. I'll see how it sounds when l get it running. $33 Australian plus local postage is all it cost.
This is the bike running with the piston on the left before l pulled it down.
I ran a hone through the barrel and then got the piston coated to suit. I think l ended up with about 5 thou clearance after the piston was coated without an excessive ring end gap.
