I ended up soaking the parts in gas and it seemed to soften it up enough to get the stuff off.

It took me a while this time, but I think if I do it once a year I'll be a lot quicker. Not only that but it's pretty easy to put it all back together now that I've done it.

Well just to update I finally had a chance just now to finish up the bike. I'm happy to report that it started on the 3rd kick.

I didn't ride it, I let it idle for about a minute and then played with the throttle letting it rev up and down a little until it warmed all the way up. It's in the garage cooling off now and I'll do it again tomorrow. I'll probably do it a 3rd time if possible tomorrow or Thursday and then go for a gentle ride.

Luckily there were no strange noises or leaks or anything so I'm really happy. I also wanted to say thanks again to you guys for answering all my questions.
