If you plan on getting one of those going, be sure to quadruple check the frame area for cranks around the shock tower area.
Look in Eric Gorr's book for info on it.

Re: 1990 KX125 bought two today Parts?
I was planning on building one but I'm torn now..the engine needs piston kit..120$...cylinder replate/finish hone 180$...transmission output shaft..85$ used...and shift selector shaft...14$ used. So motor alone will be around 400$ to do the job "right".
Then add in its missing..ignition coil, spark plug, carb float pin, front sprocket, chain, clutch perch, throttle cable and twist throttle.
seat cover and plastics are kinda Fugly so.....Idk I thought I'd be able to just get the piston kit without the replate but when I measured the cylinder the PO had to have honed it for like 20 minutes straight it's at around 56.63mm .020 over would be around 56.5mm obviously varying slightly to get the right clearance depending on the size of the piston.

I decided to try a few things before I spend a ****load of money on this thing step one is getting the motor running so here's what I did with the output shaft its not finished yet Im not going to go further until I have a sprocket and retainer

Re: 1990 KX125 bought two today Parts?
My first picture is terrible you can thank my phone for that the second one is a little bit better. But anyways I welded across the splines raising them back up very slowly and carefully I took 100 breaks making sure I didn't heat the shaft too much then I used a dremel to keep there shape and size. I took one all the way up ground it to shape and hit it with a punch several times good and hard with a 32oz ball peen hammer and its nice and solid so at least now Ill be able to get a sprocket on there I also welded the shift shaft back together only because the engine was in gear and without opening it up i had no other way of getting it into neutral .
So before anyone goes judging me these are temporary repairs (the shift lever is temporary, ill run the output shaft until it shreds again just to see how long it lasts). My priority right now is getting a running motor I may find out the clutch is shot, 3rd gear is fried blah blah blah......etc

Re: 1990 KX125 bought two today Parts?
Has anyone tried to put a kdx motor in a 125 frame?

I don't think anyone has ever tried that before. Ever. Or even thought about it. Not once.

Marrk_us on this forum has a hybrid built around on a '90 KX125

I'd be interested in the rad valve if you are looking to move it.

Very little in common on '93 to '90. That's the next generation engine and chassis (H vs J).

Re: 1990 KX125 bought two today Parts?
Ive decided I wont be fixing it there's a problem in the transmission sometimes neutral is neutral but most of the time neutral locks the engine and times it shifts into other gears sometimes it doesnt lol in the box of parts I found what looks like the needle bearings and sleeve for the clutch basket and a bunch of little shims and washers that came from the inside of an engine whether its this one or not...it seems it may be. cost of repairs + what I have in it is going to be way over what I would value the bike so as of now im hoping to sell it as a project from $200+ and im planning on holding onto the other chassis.
so to recap it now needs
Top end done/inc. replate =300$
Bottom end done all i can do is estimate =100$
Forks rebuilt =80-100$
Shock rebuilt = 80ish$
Swingarm bearings = 30ish
Linkage bearings = 60ish
Chain and sprockets = 60ish
Ignition coil = 30
Radiator hose = 10$
Throttle/throttle cable = 30$
Misc nuts and bolts = 20ish
I dont even want to add that up

I don't mind. $820.
Generally, barring catastrophic failure, I budget $2,000 to rebuild one back to new. You are talking about a transmission problem and a handful of shims and the clutch. You are about 5 minutes late on walking away from this rebuild. You can still walk away from it.

Re: 1990 KX125 bought two today Parts?
If it were a kdx it'd be worth it but early 90's kx running are 500-900 around here I only take on a project I can break even on at the end.
Oh and the extra shims and what not came with the bike I haven't opened the bottom end

Re: 1990 KX125 bought two today Parts?
well sold it as a complete non running bike yesterday for a 50 dollar profit and I got to keep the titled rolling chassis WOOT WOOT!
Unfortunately before this popped up (see below) I spent the money on a self defense item due to the landscaping company I do repair work for getting robbed last sunday by a "Professional group of criminals" <--quoting the police. I tend to work there late on the weekends sometimes into the morning so for piece of mind I wanted to be safe the police informed us that now that they know we have a truck and trailer they can quickly steal they may come back. Long story short they stole 20K in equipment that was in a truck and trailer by stealing the truck then emptied the two and ditched the truck and trailer so at least that was recovered.

I did notice It seems to be an E series with a rear drum brake
