what boots to buy ?

I agree with the Fox Comp 5 boots. I had been wearing Alpinestars Tech 3's. Very nice boots, but the leather is poor quality. The Fox Comp 5's are very comfortable and the leather is very good. Try on a pair at a local bike shop first! The fox boots run very small in size, I normally wear a size 11 with heavy MX socks and have plenty of room. In the fox boots I wear a size 12 snug and comfy with heavy socks.

+1 on the Fox Comp 5's
Good protection, decent price, didn't take too long to break in. 1 small rip, in a year of riding, quite a bit of riding, actually! :supz:

I strongly disagree with that statement as it is not true. If you had said "generally speaking" then I could agree with that. Anyways, you can find lots of quality gear and parts for a reasonable price if you do your research. I have not been unhappy with a single one of my budget buys.
My point being, If you buy a pair of $89 boots they will not be a high end pair of boots. Yes deals can be had on good quality parts but "generally speaking" you get what you pay for.

Seems to me like the lower end boots are hit or miss. Some guys have pretty good luck with them and others (like me) don't. I got a pair of Fox Comp 5s a couple of years ago when I first started racing harescrambles. They lasted about 9 months (off season included) before they started falling apart. Something like 6 races (maybe a dozen rides total). Granted, I am a fairly new rider who is tough on equipment, but that seems a little excessive to me.

thanks for all the advise guys

here is a good shot of the "off road" version of the comp 5 im looking at
http://www.perfmoto.com/fox-racing/foot ... icid=27800

kashola, i wonder if your boots were a-typical ?
i thought fox was a middle of the road if not top of the line company, they should have decent stuf i though

Tony, that is about the same prices ive been seeing on both those boots

not sure about fly as a brand though, all ive ever had from them were handle bars and they were low-end
i think my best bet will be the comp 5s
im trying to convice the guys at riders discount to let me try on a few pair but i noticed my local dirtbike shop actually carries them aswel (its thier link i posted) so if riders falls through ill ask them to fly in a few pair

If you've got $200 to spend I recommend the Gaerne GX1. High quality italian made boots that are very comfortable right out of the box. Lots of movement for a non hinged boot and they are a little more off road oriented. You can also find Gaerne sg10s and 12s used for ~200 on craigslist.

Yeah go figure that the "sale" price is about what they usually go for. Its not so hard to let something go for 10% less just as long as you jack up the price 10% more beforehand!

well, i got a lead on a used pair of comp 5s (size 13) for about $100

a local parts dealer also is having a sale this saturday and they will have the boots at 15% off...that should be about $170 after tax
they didnt have the off road version in stock but they did have both the regular comp 5s in 13 and 14 so ill try a set of each on and take it from there

SIDI Crossfire. Without a doubt the most comfortable boot I've ever worn in 30+ years of riding.

I used my RM ATVMC certificates from some NETRA events to take the edge off a pair of SG12's. Awesome boots. Extremely comfortable. Great ankle support. No inner boot to mess with either...

thanks again for all the advise guys

i ended up going with the comp-5 off road boot and they worked out very nice
my only gripe is trying to find the sweet spot where i dont get the top of the boot caught on the plastic of the bike (hard to explain but the two seem to interfere at times)

i also broke one of the buckles (the little plastic part that is bolted to the actual boot) during my first ride but a quick call to Meagan at Fox's customer support got me a handfull of replacements....free of charge (did you hear that Bates?)

i was tickled pink to actually speak with Meagan Fox over the phone :boogie:

i wouldnt have liked it any other way, thats for sure

but in this case i think it was the right thing to do
i understand things wear down and break eventually, but not after one ride
for them to be willing to stand behind thier product and send me the new buckles i think was the right thing to do
