Here's a video from an internet friend of mine riding up trail #199:
"It's a very technical trail, a trials bike might be better suited for 199."

And a review of the Rockhouse system by the same guy a year earlier:
"One small mistake on #199 and you could literally die."

Found this one on youtube. Looks like these fellas went down rather than up & had an easier time of it. Still looks extremely dangerous in places.

it175: I'f it weren't for the very steep, twisting gravel climb to the campground I'd recommend Twin Hollow. It's quite close to where the rest of us are staying. But even if your truck is a gnarly beast you'd likely have a rough time pulling a 30 footer up that mountain.

That 199 is sure more than I would do.
Unbroken bones are critical to every day life.

I'm with Tom, there's WAY too much awesome riding than go gamble on a trail like 199.

Tom knows his way around Rockhouse the most, I remember a really good mixture of trail from wide open to long, winding switchbacks, to some steep, rocky climbing.

If we end up at Bearwallow at all I've learned my way around it fairly well from going there for 2 years now, between our kdxrider trips and excursions with my oldest son on his KX100. There's a BUNCH of very good, twisty blue trail that the kdxrider group hasn't seen yet that Brandon and I ventured through. Trail 183 (single track) is miles long and fabulous, a few kdxriders have been on it. It's got some steep rocky stuff but the trail is relatively wide. So if the single track at Rockhouse is too much, we might trailer the bikes, get up a little early one of the mornings we're all there, and go the Bearwallow for 1/2 day.

Trail 183 . . . one of the easier parts

Image

Trail 183 . . . at the top of one of the tricky parts. It just keeps going down, you end up traversing around a huge rockface. Precarious but it's not like you're gonna fall off a cliff.

I'm in no hurry to meet my maker. I posted the above info so that anyone adventurous enough to try 199 will know what to expect.
I seriously doubt I'll be making the attempt.

Holy cow, I was watching the Vimeo footage of the guys doing 151 and 199. And it just dawned on my - any of you guys remember stopping at one point during a break and walking up the singletrack trail to a point where you were looking up a stepped cliff? THAT was 151 . . . the EASIER one!!

Watch the video. At 7:52 he pauses at the top of that stepped cliff we were looking up. At 8:22 you'll start to see the block that was buried in the ground At 8:30 you'll see them stop at the bottom of 151, at the "trailhead" for 199, where we stopped for our break.

There's plenty of similar-challenging, really rugged climbing terrain on some of the black and the "extreme difficult" trails without worrying about falling off a cliff!! Tom took us up our first year in '08 (year before the Vimeo footage), I think it's where 191 ended, but it was a whole lot different looking then (no construction). Then going down was eye-ball poppin' too.

I'm gettin' sweaty just thinking about it!

Terrific! I tried to catch you but we just ended up playing phone tag over and over again.

I contacted the folks that are renting our cabin to us. She said that there are RV hookups at the "Larry Joe Harless" Center; she said this place is less than a mile down the road from where we are staying. Looks like a big parking lot to me but at least you won't get muddy!

I think if you want a reasonable single track challenge at rockhouse, 151 and 176 will both give you that. They both have couple hills/ rock ledge climb deals, but they are doable for sure. 199 is truly insane, I hope I will have someone from the group to tackle it with!

The black trails were EXTREMELY enjoyable to me. Hilly but not dangerous, just climbin. Here is a facebook video of trail 29, a black one close to Man I believe. Not sure if you can view it, but add me on facebook for trip purposes. This vid is from about halfway up, but its so steep with skull sized rocks that I had to get a 2nd go at it at one point. you can hear me downshift from 2nd to first gear at 11 seconds, it was just too steep and rocky.

This trip CANNOT come fast enough.

Yes

Dates – the crews from NY and CT will be there Wednesday 5/11, CT crew is pulling out Sunday 5/15 (not sure about NY boys). Cincinnati guys will be there Thursday 5/12 and leaving Monday 5/16. ‘Not sure about sped66 . . . not sure about Tom Moody either but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him there the entire duration, he’s a trooper for sure.

I think the count is now at 16 . . . that would be the largest group thus far. And the cigars will be very special, thank you.

Tom, I'll hold a spot for you. So don't worry about it. So count me as having 5 in the cabin.

Gilbert WV after the 2009 flood.
This video was filmed a couple days after we left on our 2009 trip.
The cabin we are staying at is at 39 seconds.
