Cylinder Damage Help!

Bike is a '91 200 that I purchased earlier this summer. Pulled it apart today for a new piston and rings since it has poor compression (90psi) and look what I found. . . Pretty sure my cylinder isn't supposed to look like that.. . . Previous owner told me he "did rings" last year. The piston actually doesn't look bad with no damage. Bike always started first or second kick but had no top end and I couldn't seem to get it jetted right.

What would have caused the failure? Seized piston and the previous owner just threw a new one in and ran it?

Any other rcommendations besides ebay for a new jug? Who do I send the new one for coating?

No worries, get it replated, try powerseal, did a great job for me. (t'was recommended by Ron Black from RBD )

The leading edge of the gouge is easily as deep as my fingernail, if not more. I'm guessing too deep for a replate??

They will weld any part that is too deep and then they'll replate it. I had that on a cylinder I sent in and the welding cost was reasonable.

I've sent two cylinders to Powerseal and was very pleased with the quality of the work and they had a quick turnaround.

Thanks guys. Called both Powerseal and Langcourt and neither even wanted pictures. They both said no problem.

What would have caused the failure? Seizure?

Lean oil/fuel mixture, overheating, excessive piston/cylinder clearance (overdue top end), excessive high rpm/high load conditions, and/or sand and grit getting by the air filter (a single dunk in the drink will do this easily) can all contribute to a failure like this one.
