My next thought is to make a stator setup similar to the XR multi pole ones and see what I can drive off of it. But for right now I just want my headlight to work. No point in packing the weight if it isn't going to light things up. I am going to try some woods riding this summer and it may come in handy.

In Guitar pickup terms....
The more turns the more the resistance the higher the output. Don't know if that relates but it would be cool if it does!
I would be happy to run a 55w halogen bulb if I could with no dimming... but even a 40 or 45 would be cool.

The number of turns you want is the largest number you can GET..and have it fit under the rotor.
Maybe get some play-doh to use as a gauge...stick some globs here and there..put on the rotor..see how much room you got.
We're not talking about parts of an inch you're going to measure with a yardstick here. It's close under there.
Get yourself a mu-metal plate assembly. Or, heat, anneal your old core in your own home-made rarified hydrogen environment. That would help.

...or not.......

In regard to multiple cores...I've always wondered about those. SV..what's your input on 'em? You're going to get multiple phases (per revolution) doing that. I guess an AC regulator (or rectumfriar for that matter) wouldn't really care how many input cycles it got hit with, right? As long as it could handle the heat generated from dumping the excess.... Dumping a single phase of a 100VAC input leftovers from a 12VAC output ain't the same as trying to regulate a dozen phase inputs.
I wish I knew electrons as well as I know my own name. They're cool!
...what'z my name agin

Same guy told me to unwind both stators that I have, put both plates together, then wind over the two of them. He said that would give me close to 100 watts. I would have to grind down a small area where they bolt up but apparently they will go in. That is what this guy did with one of his KDXs. That is what I will try if the Fredette Stator does not give me enough juice to run my Dual Sport Kit properly.

I must be failing to understand the 'put together' part..'cuz I don't see that even close to fitting.
Re: 'apparently they will go in.'
I get 'no way' on that even if I do measure with a yardstick.
I'd sure enjoy getting corrected on that.
Power???

I'm thinking more like make 2 new plates that fit between the mounts for the two plates that currently reside in there. As for phases "Doh!". Me blacksmith, not black-majic practitioner. Have to look into that as well, but the thought of 180-200 watts output would be nice. Run some real bright lights and a helmet light. May even put the taillight back on as well

The headlight bulb is a H6M base right?

Something to consider...if it was easy/peasy getting hundreds of watts out of the KDX...dont'cha kinda think someone like RickyStator would'a done it?

There is also supposed to be a performance boost running with a hotter stator....

That's a fact. No 's'posed to be' about it.Indawoods wrote:There is also supposed to be a performance boost running with a hotter stator....
Doesn't mean four separately wound 'stacked' stator coils would be 4X better..or better at all for that matter.

I talked to Baja Designs (I think it was Baja Designs) about stators a while back. I contacted them because I was told by a guy that said he bought a stator from them that put out about 100w. They told me that they no longer sell those high output stators becuse the tech that knew how to wind them was no longer working there and none of th enew techs knew anything about the KDX stators. They also said something about no longer having a supply for the thicker plate (I think that was the part).
What I took away from this is that a 100w stator is possible if you know how to do it. Unfortunately I am dumb as a rock when it comes to electricity.
What we need is a KDX equivalent of the X-Prize (http://space.xprize.org/). Everyone who wants a 100w stator should put up the money to buy one to be held by Vince in escrow. If one of the electrical wizards here thinks he can build a 100w watt stator then the money held in escrow might be his incentive to put forth the time and effort to build one, knowing that he would sell a bunch of them at a decent price if he is successful and knowing that a certain number of people have already committed to buy one at a pre-determined price. If no one is able to pull it off by a certain date then Vince gives the people their money back, minus possibly a small fee for the site for his time and trouble.
Another option would be to but together a group order for a 100w stator and approcah Baja Designs about making one. If they had an order for severl of them it might be enough encntive to get of their asses and make the product again.

I talked to my brother about it...improvements, how-to, WHAT to. He's a master's degreed, worked for 20-some years designing, making, and installing radar interfaces for the Nav, electrical injuneering guy (He's the smart one of the fambly (..I'm just the good-looking...and sweet as a peach one.
). The gist of what he said, is, 'It all depends.'
Wire, wire quality, core design, flux field strength, wire size, parts proximity, etc. etc.
Remember RickyStator's exciter coils for the KDX? As I recall...they worked. Remember everybody ELSE'S coils? They didn't. Same thing. There's a lot more to a coil than takin' sum wiare 'n wrappin' it 'round that thing there.
That said....I'll buy one! I'd want to see the metrics used to determine its 100W output.
Good idea jc!
Let The Games Begin!
** I emailed RickyStator about either re-winding existing, making up new, or a quantity required to get a 'run' of 'em.

Ok, I like reading this post. So far the posts are all about rewrapping the stator with thicker wire. It made me wonder about a few things. Its been a while since I went to electronics school, but I have this to ask:
Anybody thought of replacing the magnets with stronger ones to increase the wattage? Plus re-winding the stator?
