1995 and Newer Rebound Adjustability For Forks - Product

Hey. For you 1995 and newer KDX owners, you might find this interesting. I just found a site offering a product to add rebound adjustability for the forks.

Do you '95 and up guys have a hollow damping rod??

Over the past few days, I was thinking about how one would add rebound adjustability to the stock damper rods, then I saw this company's product. The parts look just like the parts mentioned in my 1990 KX125/KX250 service manual. I don't have any '90 KX125/KX250 forks, but I think there has to be a couple of bleed holes for the needle to adjust the flow. I wondered if one could just use a real long drill bit to do the modification. I saw a 12" long 1/4 drill bit at Sears last night. I am not quite sure how wide the rod in the rebound kit is.

At the very least, it is something neat to see and hopefully discuss.

These are a dealer installed item, and require a lathe to modify the rebound
stem.

Dealer cost 165.49, we can modify the internal parts if you ship them to us.

Thanks for passing that information along. What do you think they would charge for labor? I know the damper rod is solid, isn't it? If so, they would have to be drilled (or put on a lathe, etc.) to fit the damper rods. To me, it sounds like it could be a $300 total cost. Even if I had the cash to blow, I doubt it would add $300 worth of performance.

I'M JUST BLABBERING, but I think that compression control is a whole lot more important than rebound control. Rebound damping is only trying to slow down the expanding spring. Compression is trying to control the spring, plus absorb whatever bump you just hit. I guess that is why less expensive bikes don't come with rebound adjusters (to save money basically).

I still think it would be awesome to have, though. The more buttons and knobs, the better it is, right? :-)

I'll let you know how rebound works after this weekends testing. I'm picking up my KDX tomorrow from my MX-Tech suspension guy here in AZ. I had him install new springs for forks and shocks. Plus he's putting in fork caps from a RM85 that will give me rebound

Well my suspension updates are done and worth every penny spent! The bike now handles like it should. The rebound caps work great. I'm 220 and 6'1 so I put in 0.45 fork springs with a 5.2/46 shock spring.

Rebound kit was $150. I don't think they used the original KDX rod. The shop showed me the kit before the install and it included new caps with rods.

Didn't examine them too close but I'd guess 12 inches or shorter.

If they were 12 inches or shorter, then those rods are actually not damper rods. It sounds like they use the stock damper rods and then the rods you are talking about go down into the stock damper rods. It sounds like it would look like the parts in the picture in the first post in this thread. The order is spring, small tapered rod, long rod. Turning the rebound adjuster moves the little rod within the area where a bleed hole is, metering the amount of oil flow.

Well, something like that.

The stock damper rods are hollow for about 6 inches or so (someone help me out here)

with a small hole drilled in from the side. The air goes into the little hole, up the hollow part and is released when the air bleeder screw is loosened.

It sounds to me like they drill down further for the rebound damping adjustability, then naturally move the air bleeder screw over to the side like most fork caps are.

I searched for nerd on Google and that guy came up. I put some lime green glasses on him. I am pretty nerdy about learning a lot of stuff about KDX's, so it sort of fits. Wait. I was just checking out that photo. He sure does have a huge forehead.
