Ignition Timing help please

Post by Rick84KDX200 »

I have a 1984 KDX200 and I had to fit a new style flywheel on it. I clocked the original stator according to some photos I found on this site and have my timing light set up for two stroke and marked top dead center but anytime I think I might have it close when I restart the bike again the mark is in a completely different spot like almost opposite where it was. I can keep shutting it down and restarting and it just keeps jumping around the flywheel. Kinda stumped if anyone can chime in that has fitted a E-series flywheel on a 1983-1985 or anyone with experience timing the KDX’s it would be much appreciated!
Thanks Rick

Are you saying the rotor is spinning on the taper?

No the woodruff key is in place and flywheel is not moving. I’ve found I can just turn the timing light off and on and it will do the same thing moving the tdc mark 180* out each time. What should my timing advance be set too for a 1984 KDX200? I have it to where it’s showing around 5* at idle and about 25* at 6k-6,500rpm. But not sure where it should be set.

Do you not have the OEM manual?

I do not, I was hoping someone might be able to post the ignition timing specs if they had one or the clymer service manual for the 1983-1986. All I have been able to find is for 88 and above when they went water cooled and I feel like that would definitely effect what they had the timing set at from previous air cooled models. Any help would be much appreciated!

Mine is buried somewhere, so I can not get to it. I looked in the 86 and it says 19 degrees BTDC @ 6,000 RPM.

Do you have the flywheel slotted to the correct angle? You are not trying to just bolt on a 1989 flywheel without reslotting the keyway are you?

That’s closer to what I was thinking thank you I’m sure the 86 is very similar timing wise, I’ll have to retard it a couple degrees then. As of right now I have it set at 21* at 6,000 rpm. I do have the original flywheel reslotted. It’s my first time using a timing light so maybe it was just user error initially with the timing mark moving around because it’s holding steady now. I really appreciate the help! If anyone does know of the 1984 KDX200 timing specs specifically that would be great but for now I’ll run it at 19* thanks all!

OK, I re-read it. You have an "E" flywheel bolted to the 1984 crankshaft and are turning the stator plate to match up. I finally get it now. Sorry about that. I am getting old in my old age.
