Getting closer to having the rebuild done on my plated 04 200. After that I think I'm going to get some different tires and gearing and hopefully have the suspension set up for me by this summer sometime.
I've been thinking, if it goes well on day trips I would like to try camping off the thing on one of a few different longer routes around here.
I know it's not the ideal bike for the road, but a couple of the routes I've considered have some fairly aggressive stuff. Two are around 500 miles and one is closer to 1000 miles. The routes are called the TAT 501, the +SM500+, and the Kentucky Adventure Tour. You might know of those.
I would be more likely to do one of the 500 mile routes but the KAT has some good hard sections from what I've seen. Might have to do it in chunks due to work, but the other two seem doable in a long weekend.
The issue is me and the bike being able to put up with it and make it between fuel stops, I think. Minimal luggage is another challenge but I'd like to keep it as light as I can while still camping and maybe cooking.
I have the IMS tank which is 3.4 gallons, I think. I've got a Lectron carb and the gnarly pipe as well. Would like to try starting out with stock gearing. I think best case scenario I get 40mpg but it could be half that. I'm just not sure. Any mpg and gearing numbers from people doing road riding would be very appreciated. I can carry some of those 1L fuel bottles but not sure how many exactly. Gotta figure out the longest stretch between fuel stops but it may be around 120 miles, which could be more than I can carry in fuel if mpg's aren't good.
I'm not really familiar with Lectron carbs but I figure I'd rather be a little rich than lean, if that's something I can adjust with these. There could be stretches of highway that last a half hour or better on some rides I do, but I'll try to not to coast or be wide open too much. Shouldn't ever need to get over 55-60mph but can usually get away with less.
I have a pretty good handle on what camping equipment would help me slim down but how I'm going to pack is still a little open. I'll have about 12 liters on some little saddlebags and would like to make the rest fit on my back and the fenders, maybe a tiny tank bag. Don't want a big tail bag. Don't want much weight on my back either, just some small and light stuff.
If you made it this far thank you for the interest. If you have any tips, let's hear it

assquatch,
here's how I carry an extra gallon of fuel (photo). In theory, it's possible to stack two of these cans on top of each other.
I have the Clarke tank. It's capacity is 3.6 gallons.
I ride county roads to trail heads. The average speed for this is 35 mph. It is also necessary to drive about 5 miles on a mountain highway to access one of my trail heads. The speed for this ranges from 55 to 60 mph. It's amusing to ride a dirt bike at highway speeds on wide asphalt highway.

I may have to do that. I haven't had a good look but is the subframe fairly sturdy? Wouldn't wanna break anythingbillie_morini wrote: 02:02 am Mar 19 2025 assquatch,

assquatch,
Yes, there is sturdy subframe. Will share additional photos on Friday so you can see rack bolt-up with subframe
My KDX 220 is a 1999. The teenager that I bought it from about 4 years ago replaced the original plastic body work with parts for a newer Kawasaki. I don't know what model's parts he selected, but updated the appearance. The teen also gave me all the original plastic body work. While the original body parts are thicker, they are beaten up and are not as stylish as the new plastic.

Re: Multi-Day Trips on KDX?
Billie, that appears to be a Maier KDX-MX fender based on how exacting it fits against the KDX side plates with the correct angle. The KX rear fenders don't quite mate up like that I don't believe, I'd tried fitting one before, and it required extensive modifications and still wasn't a great fit.

I'm wondering if it would interfere with my tail light or fender but I may have to try one. Where can I find them?
