Hey guys! I just picked up a mint kdx. It is a 2000 kdx220r frame with a 2006kdx220r bottom end with a brand new 2004 kdx200 top end.
It has a lectron carb and has 3 hours on it. Ive only ridden it once and I fell in love! only thing is, it sputters a little, almost like its running rich. For example, if I am at 1/3 throttle (it does it as all positions including WOT), it misfires every 20 or so strokes. Sounds sputttery. No spooge, but lots of smoke. spark plug black as midnight. Lectron at stock settings for kdx200. I tried leaning out the lectorn, but it didnt do much. could it be the reeds? or the KIPS?

Does the smoke coming out of the exhaust smell like two-stroke pre-mix, or like burning motor oil? You could potentially have a bad crank seal that is allowing gearbox oil to get sucked in and burnt. I'm not so sure the reed valves being slightly bad would have any significant effect at wide open throttle, I will let others answer that for you, as I may be incorrect. It's easy enough to pull the carb and remove the reed cage to inspect the reed valve petals.
