Current Motocross Action Magazine KDX 220

Post by John_S »

I was in the store and grabbed a magazine last night. I never even go down there anymore because they typically don’t have dirtbike magazines on the shelf.

Imagine how excited I was to see that there’s a 3 page feature on Carson Browns 97 220. It said the cylinder was sent to Pro Circuit for porting and that it surprisingly returned back with a PC pipe and KX 250 silencer that Mitch Payton said is a direct fit for the KDX. No more info on the silencer.

It also has a Lectron carb and KX 125 forks.

If you’ve never seen him or this bike before YouTube “Carson Brown KDX”. There’s a couple videos of it and another that I can’t find where he rides it on his track at night with the headlight on, in the deep snow. That and all of his other videos are really amazing. He tears it up on anything from a CRF 50 to a 1983 RM 500. I saw a video about how Red Bull decided to sponsor him based on his social media popularity with him riding his backyard track. The only non competing athlete to ever get a Red Bull sponsorship. I like how sometimes he nails the throttle at the entry of a turn instead of the exit.

My favorite part of the article said that the KDX is his favorite to ride from his huge fleet of bikes. He even sells a “Legendary KDX 220” T shirt. Great to see the KDX getting praise in the magazine.

Interesting, I'm not sure if that's a KDX shock, supported by the fact that there are some custom hand made suspension links in a non-stock length installed on his 220... I never noticed that before!

Shortly I'll be swapping to a 2001-2004 RM125 shock which is an inch longer than stock, plus 7mm or 10mm internal lowering spacer, plus KLX300 stock suspension links which are 4.5mm longer than stock, to lower it back down to I'm guessing around 3/4" taller ride height than stock. Better clearance for the big rocks and lazy tree trunk hopping... '98 RM125 forks will be paired with the '01 RM125 shock. Fork valving is squared away for a really nice plush woods setup. Shock valving will take several atttempts to revalve.
Anyhow I believe Pro Circuit has done similar to what my plans are, taller KX shock plus longer links to lower it closer to stock.

Dirt Bike Magazine's recent coverage over this awesome 220 build of Carson's, but not a very in depth technical article unfortunately. Most details are absent. I can't wait to see the MXA version, as it sounds like it's a lot more detailed than this mention of a few details:

Chuck, I was looking for more information on the bike and came across the Dirt Bike Magazine article. The MXA article took that and reprinted it. Must be the same publication company. They added in the part about the KX 250 silencer but it’s still the same short write up. It also says that Vintage Works MX took the stock shock and totally rebuilt it. That’s all the info on the shock and the only 2 things that I can tell that they added from the DM magazine article.

Thanks for the update. Dirt Bike, Motocross Action, Mountain Bike Action, etc. are all by Hi Point Publishing. They have been around 50 years.

HELLO, I walked past the magazine today and it IS Dirt Bike Magazine. I remember seeing a subscription ad in there for MXA and thought that's what magazine I had.

Chuck look at the picture you posted. Remember back on your Pro Circuit pipe thread people were commenting on the fit because this same bike had the radiator shroud trimmed. He must've took a spill and bent the pipe. The picture you posted on this topic has plenty of breathing room between the pipe and shroud.

It's so cool watching Carson ride those older bikes, especially the KDX! My son bought me the KDX shirt he sells - pretty cool!
