KDX220, new to me

Just bought this from my dentist, 98 KDX220, all stock, he bought it 12yrs ago, hasn't ridden in 7yrs, low hours.

He had to pull a few teeth to get me to buy it, selling it left a cavity in his garage.

I'm pretty sure its in better condition then my 200, its nice to know no one has touched the engine. From what I've been reading a good pipe for the 220 is the FMF desert pipe. The only thing I was going to modify was the pipe and Boyesen Reeds, what do you think? I have a desert pipe already.

Wow - that bike looks in great condition! And yes to your question, the majority of folks go with the desert pipe for the 220. I'm also running Boyesen 607 reeds which seem to work well.

I would do a ton of things before slapping on that new, shiny pipe:

clean / grease bearings
fork oil
shock oil
clean out fuel tank (take it off)
clean carb
new air filter
lube chain
check wheel bearings
etc., etc., etc.

All of the above goes without saying, definitely what’s listed will be doing, I guess I should have been clear, opps. That’s my standard used bike check list also.
Adding a pipe and reeds are the only things I’ll modify, at least for the moment.

hehehe, yeah I saw that on the lock. Picking it up at high noon. At the dentist office on Monday he asked me what's new, we usually talk motorcycles so I mentioned I bought and fixed up a '01 KDX200, he briefly said I have a KDX220 need to sell that wasn't ridden in 7 yrs. This guy has money and nice stuff, so told him to send a pic. He asked me how much they sell for, told him what I've seem them for sale in my area, between $1000-$2500, depending on the condition and add-ons. So $1800 later.......

Nice score. I’m stilllll looking, seen two close by but others got the jump on them. I’ve scored once on a cherry ‘84 xl250r dual carb with no issues. I shouldnt have sold it, bought a slow 09 klx250s dumbest move everrrrrr the xl was faster & lighter!

The ‘84 xl250 is really nice. I bought a new '82 XR500 Honda, way too heavy. Looking back there were so many bikes in '82 that were a lot better.

Update,
checked swingarm and shock linkage bearings, all look new(re-greased); installed new tires and checked wheel brgs. The PO drained tank and carb 7yrs ago when last used, both were clean. Sprockets look orig and almost new, a little rust on the chain. I’ll be changing fork oil, engine and coolant. Replaced all radiator hoses.
It’s apparent the bike was never disassembled, correct bolts all in the place, most have the factory lock-tite.
I think the tires may be the originals.


Only issues are crack on the gas tank near the filler and rear shock rebound dampening doesn’t change turning the adjustment screw.
I’ll try plastic epoxy on the tank first, I have a rebuilt shock to replace the one in question.

Very few epoxies work well on polyethylene(most common) gas tanks. Find a good plastic welder to do the repair.

Another option *might* be P-Tex. I've used it to repair KTM gas tank/shroud mounting points.

Very nice!!! A good motorcycle suspension shop can rebuild that rear shock. For the gas tank check out plastex.net https://www.plastex.net/
I have used it to repair many plastic parts and it works great.
