anyone got a close up picture of how they rigged their kdx light to fit onto the kx forks?  i'm sure something is better than my zip ties

Stock straps up top and zip ties at the bottom unless you go aftermarket.

If you get some straps...maybe OFF an aftermarket shell..make sure you're getting straps for a USD setup..not conventional.  You can space the USD straps to a conventional fork with 'stuff'..but fitting a set of conventional straps to a USD setup is going to be a real squeeze.
