is this the best place to get power for trail tech vapor

Hi All, i read that to get power for the trail tech you can tap into the headlight supply but is that the best solution?.

i am mechanically proficient but electrically challenged.

i didn't install the three way switch (dont know if it works or what it does if anything)

all help is much appreciated .

You can run it off the headlight supply, BUT, the headlight has to be on or the tach will do all kinds of crazy stuff. It doesn't like the direct AC power with no load on it, for some reason. But if the headlight is on it should be fine

My guess would be right into the 12v output from the VR.

that is were i connected mine. I pulled apart the connector to the yellow wire, and put the red power wire from the trail tech in there then put the connector back on. The tach is a little off but i don't look at the tach anyway.

well partial success,

the water temp Gage is not reading .
and without the lights on the revs are double-ish.
but overall happy so far ( no fires ) .

the temp thing is weird as i used the same ground point for both power and temp ???.
I plan on moving the power supply to the VR and checking the earth.

i think i read that the shift lights dont work if only battery on internal power so the power and earth should be good ...

again any sugestions are truly welcomed.

Reset the Vapor by pushing and holding the little reset button on the back. I've installed two and both times the temp didn't work until doing a reset.

PS also what is a good number for the temp range ,now it works .
i thought 180F as a high and 220F as a danger level.

Good to hear you have temp working.
I'm not sure about power.
I think your settings are a good starting point. I've not had mine on the KDX long enough to get a feel for it. On my '06 KLX250, the stock over-temp warning lights up between 225 to 235. I set the vapor to trigger at 210 (warning) and 215 (danger). The warning started at 195, and I kept bumping it up because it was lighting too soon.

i don't know if it is OEM but my bike has what looks like 4 x 9v battery's tapped together and cable tied to the handle bars.
would taking the power from one of the wires from this bundle be a more stable power supply ?
but then would the backlight stay on all the time and flaten the battery?

The battery doesn't sound stock. It may provide a more stable power supply.
The vapor senses when the bike has stopped and shuts down the backlight after ten minutes +/-.

That yellow wire that you showed above, comes directly from the stator. It needs to go through a regulator/rectifier before you can tie into it. Maybe try tracing the head light switch power wire back to see what it connects to, then tie into the same point?

If I were you, I wouldn't trust the battery pack thing that you were talking about, especially if you don't know where it came from, how to charge it, what the output is, etc...

I know this from putting a BD dual sport kit on my bike. When I did, I ditched the stock regulator and rectifier and plugged in the BD harness right at that connection. The BD kit comes with its own regulator and rectifier to power everything. They even leave you an open power connection to tie the speedo into... super slick if you ever wanted to go down that road.

this were the wires go to the voltage regulator.

a brown and a black/yellow.
and there is an inline plug which would a good place to take the power from .
which color wire should i use .

Many thanks to all that helped but i was unable to find a stable power supply for the vapor and will just have to run with the lights on.
