kdx86/87 air box

Can anyone tell me if the rubber boot from the carby to the air box will fit from a 1985 kx 125 onto the kdx 200 86/87 the air box looks diffrent but the rubber boot looks the same mine has cracks and have found a kx one but not sure any help would be great thank jeff

I heard a damaged intake boot could be repaired using plastidip if it isn't too bad, mines cracked on the outside but the inside looks fine. Maybe worth a shot

Either the intake boot to the carb, or motor is not worth the risk of prematurely wearing out your motor for a cheap modification.

After 30 years of expansion of retraction of daily temperatures it takes it toll.

If you are in the market for a used one, there are very few places that would have a good one in the U.S.

High humidity areas that don't have severe fluctuations in temperature is about the only place a soft rubber piece would survive.

Hawaii, East Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida come to mind, they have there own issues with major corrosion on steel, but soft rubber would last a whole lot better than where I come from in Northern California (Sacramento Valley). Temperatures here can change 40F a day, i.e. 65F for a low and 105F for a high.

I know the price is a little steep, but what does it cost in a rebuild, not to mention your time ???

Just a heads up I put a heavy coat of plastidip on mine to fill in some holes . Haven't had the chance to ride much because I'm brakeless and it's been snowing but I will let you know how well it holds up. If this doesn't work I'm going to use gasket maker to fill the cracks.

If it is a spare bike that gets ridden sparingly, then you "might" be OK.

If it is your primary ride, pony up and get the correct replacement.

In my neck of the woods, I can't take the risk, Nor Cal is full of extremes.

Your profile does not designate where you are from, so if your conditions are very humid, you "might" be OK.

But if your weather conditions are like mine, really wet in the Winter, really dry in the Summer, then not a good choice.

I was curious as to your question on the 85 KX125 air filter box to carburetor fitment to the 86/87 KDX200.

The airbox itself is definitely the same as the 84/85 KX125.

The 85 KX 125 had a Mikuni 34mm VM34SS carburetor that look identical to the 86/87' KDX200.

They also appear to share the same, or pretty darned close frame and swingarm & linkage.

There is a "high probability" that this is a cross over part from the 85 KX 125 line.

The difference might be the area where the shock mounts, protruding into the boot... where the indention is.

The lid is the same, but KX had air holes. If someone with a 1986 - 1988 KDX wants to get fancy, one can get the KX lid for non- dusty conditions.
