1987 Restoration, Hope you enjoy the Pitcures

Post by J Ace »

When I was a kid I had a picture of this bike, so now having a chance, I'll Restore one. I'm into Harley's, trail bikes are a whole different story. As most of you know that these years of the '87 some parts are hard to find, especially trying to make it look original. The Air Box is one and then the Kickstand. Enjoy some pictures.

Very nice..!! It will be a shame to use it and get it dirty.

What did you use to refinish the frame and swingarm?

Thanks, I had the frame, swing arm, engine brackets, pegs, upper rear shock link, rear pedal and parts blasted and powder coated. Exhaust was sand blasted and painted high heat paint.
I want the bike to be new again, show it off at the up coming bike show in the restored vintage section and plus it's for sale.

Wow. Nice job. In my experience, the older the bike, the longer one must wait for hard to find parts.

That's why it's great to have forums like this, to ask questions, ask around for tips on finding parts. Still hoping to find the Air Box, kickstand and brake rod.

KDXohio, I think you may have saved my bacon, they have listed an air box. I left an email to order.
Let's hope I get it. :supz:

No luck with bike boneyard, they sold the air box, I guess they didn't update their website yet.
Back to trying to find an air box, please let the word out. Still searching.

I might have a lead on one from a salvage yard, if it doesn't work out, I'll ask you if you can help. Thank you so much.

J Ace,

Call Jeff Fredette, he had a "complete airbox assembly" about 4 weeks ago for an 87 when I called him.

He will more than likely have the kickstand as well.

My project also came w/o an airbox, (how does that happen anyway ???)

My project is on hold, as I am working on my KTM 520 EX/C restoration.

Regards,

Michael

I found the swing arm sliders from DC Pladtics, upper and lower roller chain guards on eBay, the chain guide below the swing arm was from eBay. The large plastic guard I also found on eBay, they over time turned yellow, so I sanded and painted grey, same as the mud guard infront of the rear tire for the Unitrack.

Where did you get the shock from? I have an 87 KDX 200 also and mine is toast. The bike sits very low in the back

J Ace,

What color code powder coat and brand did your Powder Coater use ???

Nice match to the original color and powder coating is so much more robust than the original factory paint.

Once I got my KTM frame back from my powder coater and seeing the superior quality, I am a fan.

Thanks !!!
