My 87 is 3 wires as well. Same colors as yours. Yellow is the lighting coil. Red/white is source and trigger for the CDI and Black is ground for CDI. Test yellow to blackm should be low ohms, 3-4 ohms. Test red/white to black should be higher ohms 80-120 ohms.

This is my first time checking resistance. I measured 1.6 on the yellow wire to ground and 60.5 on the red/white wire to ground. Are these too low? The red/white coils ground screw was very loose. This might've been the whole problem.

Those values should be ok.

Are there values I can check while kicking it to make sure the stator is working? Or what is my next step?

Help with 88 kdx200 stator/flywheel

That guide says 400 ohms from the coil. Is this right for my bike?

I now have a visible spark but it seems weak. I tested a.c. voltage coming off of the stator coil. The guide posted says it should be 30v. The highest voltage I got was 18.

Help with 88 kdx200 stator/flywheel

Is that just a guess at a fix? Or are my voltage and resistance readings leading to a bad source coil.

I saw one from Rickystator for $99. Is this what I should buy or can I just buy some copper wire and rewind the coil?

of course you can wind it yourself but the challenge is how to rig up something to make the process mechanized because making hundreds of turns by hand is kinda "superhuman".
Did you use an analog voltmeter with the CDI disconnected from the stator coil? Did you give it a good kick with the spark plug out?

I used a digital multimeter. I have an analog, should I be using that instead?

I've kicked it with the plug out to feel compression and to view the spark, touching the plug to the head.
My kickstart does feel very loose.

Help with 88 kdx200 stator/flywheel

I have to find an analog meter. In the mean time, can anyone tell me for sure which ignition coil I need? I found one on rmstator, but I bought a puller from them describe as for an 88 kdx which did not fit my year. So I do not want to repeat that.

Help with 88 kdx200 stator/flywheel

I got that. What I am asking is, is the coil on rmstator, that I posted, the correct replacement?

I am going through a source coil replacement for my 84 KDX200 and I bought the RM00035 source coils you linked from rmstator last week. From your photos, the source coils do not seem to be the right parts for your stator.

Rmstator ships a pair of source coils like their web site photo shows. (Neither is the lighting coil). They mechanically fit the stator on my 84 KDX200, replacing the stacked large and small coils that appeared to be original equipment. I have questions into rmstator regarding their coil resistance specs (170 ohms, 24 ohms) versus measured (195, 34) versus the Clymers manual specs (104, 38) for large and small coils (large, small).

The Clymer manual for the '88 KDX200 lists 54.5 ohms for the Blk to w/r pair, and neither coil spec'd or measured is within 20% of the factory spec as stated by Clymer. (I am assuming the resistance spec/measurement is only the source coil, and I know that is the case for the '84 model after replacing the source coils.)

Incidentally, from web site photos, rickystator seems to sell the identical stator source coils for nearly double the price, but I have no knowledge of their specs or applicability. rickystator lists a single source coil for the '88 KDX200 stator that looks similar to the one on your stator. http://www.rickystator.com/product/stat ... coil-86-88.

I hope this helps,
Ben

Well. I bought the rm00035 before reading your post. They indeed sent the two coils from the picture. The bigger one is the exact size as my ignition coil. Ill let you know if it works.

You might measure the resistance of the coil and compare it with the OEM specification before installing. No sense installing a coil not designed for the bike, or that was not manufactured properly.

Good luck,
Ben
