I know the old bikes didn't have titles. And I know back in the day some KDXs have been made street legal. Also my brother mentioned to me that to ride in some places or public places that you have to have it registered. While the ladder would be nice as I want to be legal and be registered, I also want to try and get a street plate.
I bought the bike from a guy I somewhat know and I'm sure it's not stolen. Tho I did not get a title nor a bill of sale. The rear fender has holes in it that looks like it could be where a plate was but that's just a guess. I've done a bonded title here in Iowa before for my 1978 gs750 street bike but the owner lived locally and I was able to get him to sign saying he sold it to me and in my small town they knew him and he was the original owner tho I believe they told me the bike wasn't even in the system as they didn't keep records 25 years ago and last it was registered was in 1986.
So I was hoping to get a plate and at the minimum make it registered if that's what your suppose to do. Iowa kinda strick on bikes for off road use only on the new stuff making them street legal but the old stuff use to get plated way back when. I know my dad had a dirt bike converted in the early 80s.
Lastly if all else fails, could one cut the triple tree off the frame and weld a new one with a bike that has a title, maybe even from a different model Kawasaki?
Blast me away with your thoughts and knowledge ?"!!!!!!?

I mailed my bill of sale (make one up if yours is 'lost'), the application for registration, and a couple other forms (available on the South Dakota DMV website) to them and got a tag in less than a week. The title took about two weeks to arrive.
I transferred the title to my state, and kept the beautiful South Dakota tag as a reminder of how state and federal governments should work FOR THE PEOPLE instead of against the people. I really like that tag. :)
Since then I've insured the bike, and been stopped a few times because the tag was covered in mud. Wiping the mud off, and offering real-for-life insurance papers up to the officer usually deflates his (or her) intentions of ruining the day's ride. They're usually very interested in how I "got a two stroke to be street legal?!?!" and talk for a few after that.
Isn't it silly that all it takes is a piece of paper to make something go from 'bad' to 'completely ok and acceptable' ?
magic papers.
lol.

Re: 1987 kdx titling
I did a google and found a site that had a step by step. I printed both forms. Sounds like i will have to get the bonded title first tho through Iowa unless theres another form i can do as there was no issued title in 1987 im guessing. So advice on the title. It says on the other site i read, that the state of which the bike in title needs to be sent with even if its not a street legal title like "OSA" i think they called it.

Re: 1987 kdx titling
There is a third form. Its an affidavit saying " I, John Doe, purchase a 19-- kdx200 from the state of -------. The state of ------ does not require a title for off road vehicles". Or something to that extent. Its on page 16 of the supermoto junkie thread.
