Hi guys, my 92 came with one of these mufflers(top one) but it's just the shell. I picked up a replacement stock assembly that says it's from a 92 kdx200, so it should fit perfect(bottom one). I can't figure out how to get it open to replace the packing though, so I compared the two for ideas, and they're different! Help?
That top one looks like a much older unit. C series KDX, perhaps? The lower one appears to be an FMF at a glance. Once you get the bolts out, which it looks like you have, some heat and persuasion should get it apart.
Hmm. Said it was a stock unit, and there's no fmf identifiers to be found on it. I'm kind of uncertain what to pull on to separate it. Guess I'll mess around and see what happens.
Are they spark arrestors?
I got it apart using the mallet tap method. The packing is in decent shape, but I'll replace it anyways. Doesn't look like the innards of the stock pipe, though. Just the perforated tube, the packing and the shell. no bends, grommets or screens. And absolutely no identifying marks anywhere. I'd expect to find FMF stamped somewhere.
I am thinking the top one is an Answer S/A-Pro. The end cap looks to be off of it. It should have J / A or something like that stamped on it. Someone help clear my memory.
The bottom looks like an FMF Power Core silencer (not spark arrestor).
If you can stick a long thin rod through it, then it is just a silencer.
I have an Answer SA Pro/2 on my E-Series. The top in the photo could be a rattle-canned Answer, but there do appear to be quite a few differences between that and mine, beyond the obviously missing guts. FWIW, mine is stamped with the following on the underside near the end cap:
"J & R - ANSWER SPARK ARRESTER
U.S. PAT. NO. 3407575 MODEL AP-650-0
APPROVED U.S. FORREST SERVICE"
Note: I believe all forestry-approved spark arrestors must be stamped.
Bummer. I don't want to catch the desert on fire. And I don't want to restrict the flow - she pulls so hard right now!
There are no identifiers marking the empty shell either. My parts bike has what looks life the same fmf exhaust with a cobra spark arrestor model 300 attached to the end, so I guess I'll swap that assembly over until I find a better solution.
So..... bike runs good. Water pump seal might be bad. Clutch lever seal is leaking. Bike pulls nice though. It's so crazy loud though, I'll sell it very soon if I can't fix that noise level.
So I'm thinking maybe go back to a stock exhaust (like I thought I had) or a fmf tcII. Can you guys help me understand which of these are actually stock?
