Why not mod E-H stator with E-H flywheel in C Fredette conv?

Post by bob_jones »

On the C-series Fredette flywheel fix, we're cutting slots to adapt C-stator to work with unmodified late model (E-H) flywheel right? Well, is there any significant drawback / reason not to mod a late model stator to work with the later flywheel and just have a fully modern generator altogether? I mean, if we're already cutting slots, then what's the harm? Am I missing something? TIA!

Not sure, but ... 6 volt vs. 12 volt??

Correct me if I'm wrong but that shouldn't matter I don't think. I believe all generators make way over 12v depending on rpm and then get regulated downstream. Is this correct?

I did exactly what you described and it works perfectly. I did even think about the 6v verse 12v thing. Just made some slots and away I went.

That's what was thinking. What did you put it on and where, exactly did you make your slots? Did you change anything downstream?

I put a 92 model flywheel on my 87 KDX200. I did it a while ago, so will have to have a look re the slots. I'll take a picture, but it might be a while as im away from home for a couple of weeks. Didn't change anything up stream.

a proper 6v gen would put out an excess of 12v. Maybe 7-8v. A 12v gen will put out 13-14. I dont think that will matter here when your just changing the flywheel. Different magnets on the same windings should come close to the same voltage. Pretty sure the fredette setup is the same as what youre talking about. It uses a later flywheel, but rather than re-keying, it re-locates the windings on the stator plate. Same result.
