E Series Clutch Options
Trying to figure out what options are out there for the E series.
Through research it seems the E and H clutches are different so you cant just swap parts between them. I believe what ive found is that the number of notches on both the inside of the plates and the outside of the disks are different between the two. The only after market clutches I can find that is still available is the Mitaka.
Can you swap over a complete clutch from the H series to the E or is the bolt pattern/overall size different?
Thanks for any input.

Re: E Series Clutch Options
I believe the entire H series assembly would fit. I have looked into that option a bit myself.

Re: E Series Clutch Options
The gear is identical between the two models, so you are good on that part.
I seem to recall that the outer diameter of the H series basket is larger than the E, so you might have to do some machining to get the H basket to fit though.

If no one knows for sure, maybe i'll see about getting a really cheep H basket and see what it takes. I'll post up over on that board and see if anyone has one thats notched laying around.

That's specifically about the EFM h series auto-clutch into the E series, but it should give you an idea. I think it won't be any problem, but can't be sure without a basket to test fit.

Re: E Series Clutch Options
From that article, it looks like that setup used an H series basket, it was really only the pressure plate that was different? Seems to be identical to stock at least. That being true, I shouldn't have any issue with a full H series clutch, I would just need the entire assembly.Julien D wrote:http://www.kdxrider.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9733

Re: E Series Clutch Options
The overall basket is a tad deeper I think, but without the extra plates for the auto-clutch, it should work just fine. Might have to do something to change pushrod length, but I don't think you'd have any problem more serious than that.

Re: E Series Clutch Options
Are you just trying to replace a notched basket or is some other part of the clutch worn out?
I saw in your other post that Pro-X makes a basket and that you mentioned that Makita makes one. If you are just trying to replace a notched basket, the easiest way is to just get one of those. That is unless you are just trying to tinker around.
Finding a complete H series clutch isn't easy anymore. The few that are out there are going for over $100. And there is a good chance that the basket won't be in that great of shape.
A billet/forged basket will probably outlast the E series at this point.
If you still want the H series basket, you can contact me though the link in my signature. If you go to the "stuff for sale" there is a contact form.

Re: E Series Clutch Options
Honestly I don't know if the basket is notched or if the inner hub is also, I haven't taken it apart yet (I could be really lucky and the PO just put the wrong oil in it). My reasoning behind putting the H clutch is that parts are just easier to find for them still. Pro-X made a basket, but you cant find them anymore for the E, Makita does still. Less plate options, and used inner pieces are really hard to find for the E. If by the time I need to get it fixed I still havent found an H, i'll end up just getting the Makita basket.Tedh98 wrote:Are you just trying to replace a notched basket or is some other part of the clutch worn out?

Re: E Series Clutch Options
I forgot that I had an E series clutch, so I took some measurements. The pictures turned out too dark, so I'll do my best to explain the what and where.Tedh98 wrote:I seem to recall that the outer diameter of the H series basket is larger than the E, so you might have to do some machining to get the H basket to fit though.
The OD of the H basket is the same at the base of the basket and at the tip of the fingers. The OD of the H basket is 135.5 mm.
The E series basket has two different OD. The widest part is at the base where there is a ring or band that is larger in diameter than at the tip of the fingers. The OD at the base is 133.6 mm and the OD at the tip of the fingers is 131.6mm.

Re: E Series Clutch Options
Thanks for that info, Ted. That being the case, there may be some interference between the H series basket and the main gear on the E bike. I have an unknown basket in the garage which came with my bike. The gear mesh is fine in my 89, but the basket itself rubs on the main gear. Looks like it could be fixed by taking a small amount of material from the very bottom corner of the basket, but I abandoned that project. I am thinking that basket is from an early KX, but I can't be sure.

E Series Clutch Options
Sorry for the hijack but, hmm, now this has got me thinking. I wonder if I could swap a complete E setup in to an H? I have a nice E-series Dyna-Ring setup already and it would be nice to bolt it on my 220.

Re: E Series Clutch Options
I am guessing you could. The gear is identical so no problems there. There might be a height difference but that should be workable.

Well, I'll probably try it and I'll start a separate thread on it when I do.Tedh98 wrote:I am guessing you could. The gear is identical so no problems there. There might be a height difference but that should be workable.
