need help identifying this kdx.
Lost out on the 400 deal. Seller didn't seem that motivated and kept coming up with excuses why they couldn't show the bike. Oh well. Posted an ad asking for project kdx bikes that are air cooled. I have a played 84 that I like and want one set up for racing from the ground up in vintage. I got a reply tonight from a guy who is claiming it's an 86 model. The motor is completely apart as it needs a replaced crank and piston (bent rod). To me that's the hard part and it would allow me to start fresh from the ground up (bearings seals etc). The roller is all there except it's missing the headlight and tail light. NBD. It does have front drums so I do not think it's a C model (pre 86). He is asking 250 but he said to shoot him an offer and see what happens. Most likely I'm going to see the bike this weekend.

Re: need help identifying this kdx.
Texted with the owner today. Gonna go see the bike on Sunday. He wants 250 for it. Cases are separated due to a bent rod? How does that happen. Piston needs replacing as well. Says he has all the parts for the motor. I was thinking 150-200 for it. I would slap a new crank and piston in there. I would like to put an 86 front end on it for the disc set up. Flea bay has some forks and triple clamps but they seem to be more expensive lately. Thoughts?

Keep in mind that pistons for the 83-85 are hard to come by. There is a guy who sells them on eBay from time to time for around $200. One time I found a NOS one for $60 and grabbed it for a spare. That is probably why he hasn't fixed it himself. I would offer him 100 for it.

Re: need help identifying this kdx.
Does the 86 have a different wrist pin size and stroke? If not I can get it bored over and use a different piston? There are slots in the 86 piston for the power valve but I am wondering if it would work.

Don't know for sure if the 86 piston would work with out modification.
The 85 cylinder and piston looks usable. The clutch cable bracket it not broken which is good.

I am thinking if taking a chance and trying an 86 piston. I don't see why it wouldn't work. Both have the same bore size. Hopefully the wrist pin would work.

Update. Found a post on the thumpertalk 2 stroke section. A poster said an 86 will not fit but he did get a 95 piston to fit. It does sit 1.5mm lower but he says it does run well.

If you use a 95 piston let us know how it works.
All I have read is that for 86 and newer, you would need to ground the skirt down a little to match an 83-85.

Well I'm hoping it's a direct swap. I'm going to use an oem piston from partzilla. That way it will be correct. I also have a cylinder hone that I'm thinking of using to clean up the bore without having to re sleeve it. I've yet to use it and I think it would be good to test it out on this! Anyways I'm going to see the bike tomorrow and it'll be a nice write up for the forum. I utilize this forum as a library for how to's. It's always nice to contribute information.
