Hey guys, I have an 89 that im changing the water pump seal on. The 91-94 uses an additional seal for the water pump and I'm planning to install this one on my 89. I guess other guys have done it and had good luck.
My question is in regards to the orientation of the seals. My 89 manual states that the open side of the seal should face the impeller, but the other seal isn't mentioned since it wasn't included until 91. Does anyone know which direction the second, smaller seal is installed? Also, although I don't think it's likely, I suppose that the direction of the larger seal could have changed with the addition of the smaller seal. Does anyone have a later manual or supplement that they could look this stuff up in? Thanks.

91-94 water pump seal installation
Are you the guy who is now running a 91-94 right side cover + impeller shaft on his 89?
If you are running those then you need small seal, to compensate due to the +/-3mm that was milled out of the cover to fit the different shaft.
The larger seals are the same part throughout the series run, the smaller seal just goes on the outer side of the larger one. The hollow side of the larger seal should face in towards the motor.

Re: 91-94 water pump seal installation
I was able to fit both seals in my 89, but now that I think on it I had to replace some bits due to a cracked RH engine case and inner clutch cover when I bought the bike. It's possible I have a 90-94 inner clutch cover....

Re: 91-94 water pump seal installation
Hmmm. I still have an '89 cover as far as I know. I'd like to upgrade to the later cover but I haven't been able to find one. I guess I'll take some measurements to determine whether the bore is deep enough for both seals. If it isn't I guess I'll just use the wide seal. I don't think I'll have trouble this time around. I found a better gear/shaft that isn't as scored as the one that I was using. Plus, it seems that I installed the seal backwards when I put it together the first time. Whoops.

Really an educated guess when it comes to the covers, as 89-90 and 91-94 covers have different part #'s and the 91+ shaft does not have the raised shoulder behind the gear. So the shaft sits slightly deeper in its seat? Either the shaft part in front of the gear would have been extended or the impeller housing moved back a few mm?? Don't really know

91-94 water pump seal installation
Julien, you must have the later cover. I measured mine and there isn't enough room for both seals. So for the record, you must have the later (91-94) engine cover and water pump gear/shaft if you want to run run the two-piece seal.
Hopefully mine seals up properly this time. I see no reason why it won't but I'll be keeping my eyes open for a later cover and gear in the meantime.
