1984 smokes- silencer problem?

Post by ctrider »

Hi, I am new to the forum, recently picked up an '84 200 (a red one- I bought one new back in '84) in excellent shape- really low hours- still has original chain and sprockets, and had original tires- good tread but lots of dry rot. I'm trying to find a quiet aftermarket spark arrestor/silencer for it and was wondering if anyone new what would fit. i was unable to find anything on line. I had my local bike mechanic go through it- reeds, carb- new jets a bit leaner, timing mark looks on, cleaned the tank, piston looks perfect, air filter, etc.. It starts first kick, but smokes a lot (race fuel at 50:1) and is sluggish down low. at mid throttle it wakes up and takes off. he suspects the stock silencer (a welded unit) is all gummed up. thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome to KDXRIDER! Wow, a red 84! Would love some pics. As for the silencer, if it's a welded up unit it probably has no packing. You could try to burn it out with a torch or stick it in a campfire for a bit. For aftermarket, I can't think of a SA offhand, but DG made a straight through silencer which can still be found and is quite nice. http://dirtoverstock.com/detail.aspx?ID=257
I doubt that a smoking problem is too closely related to the silencer flowing freely though. That would be more of a not-smoking much, spooging a bunch, and not running well kind of problem.

Update- I got the DG silencer- good price, fits nice and the bike isn't too loud. i had the chance to take it to a local mx track to get some run time on it, (I followed my son as he rode on the small track- he rides a KX100, so I was on the throttle a bit to keep up) and the smoke cleared up after a while. It probably just needed to be run to clean everything out. I do want to try your suggestion to clean out the original silencer- I like the noise level and spark arrestor for the woods. It is still a bit sluggish on the low end, and has a rather abrupt hit in the mid-range that gets the rear tire spinning. I don't remember my old one acting like that, I thought it was much more linear and controlled; of course, its been about 20 years since I had that one, and I've been riding a KX250F four stroke since I started riding again. I can't wait to get to some trails and see how it does!
