The trials tire is one of those things that you just can't understand until you try it.

I'm running the Brigdestone 403/404 tires with a 90/100 up front and a 110/100, why?
Because they were on sale for $100 a set.

I was using a well worn Pirelli MXextra 110/100 18 and straight line traction was excellent but it wouldn't corner any more. I just put on a new Pirelli 100/100 18 to see if the cornering would improve, but wasn't impressed at 14 PSI. I ran it like that to make sure the bead set. I will lower the air pressure and try again.
This is my rifle, this is my gun, the YZ to go fast, the KDX is for fun!

If you are turning a lot, the 100/100 is the way to go. If you ride more open areas, with less radical turning, you can get away with a little wider tire and not notice it as much.
