Reserve tank

How far would you guess your reserve tank lasts? I have run my new bike out of gas twice, only to flip to reserve and have it run about 30 seconds. Not enough fuel to take off, but the bike will run.

I am a first time bike owner, sure didn't think i would run out of gas...TWICE!!?? My buddies are gonna have a fit when they find out about this one. I ran out Sunday and they got me a powerade bottle full, so i could make it back to the truck.

If that is all your getting on reserve then you are losing fuel somewhere. Check to make sure your float level is correct. I used my reserve once and I got another 4 miles out of it. Plus, how far are you riding that you can go through a tank of fuel in a day? I can ride for 5+ hours and never hit reserve.

take apart the petcock and make sure the reserve side has not dislodged

Depends on terrain, I've hit reserve on as little as a 4 hour ride and as long as a 10 hour ride

I've gone close to 10 miles on reserve, babying it and coasting, whenever possible

I get about 80Km on a tank, then another 15Km or so (if I ride gentle) on reserve. My bike is jetted on the lean side of "perfect" though.

Sunday, i rode from about 11- 5:30. Yesterday i only rode about 4 1/2 hours but i didnt fill it before the ride. DUH! I am thinking i am burning quite a bit of fuel, i need to fill my tank and see how long it lasts.I dont think i could get 5 hours out of it though.

Cha Ching Depends on your average speed during those 4 & 1/2 hours of riding. If you averaged 30 mph you went 135 miles. If your tank contained 2.8 gallons at the start you were getting about 48 miles per gallon. That would be very good But if you averaged only 3 miles per hour you are getting slightly less than 5 miles per gallon.

It should be very obvious then that you should try to average 30 miles per hour to get the better milage ! (TIC)*

when is the fuel tap on the reserve setting?

A) when the handle is pointing towards reserve
B) when the handel is covering the word reserve

the reason i ask is because which anwser is right depends on the bike
before i bought my KDX i had a yamaha DT50LC as a daily driver and it has a arrow stamped on the fuel tap handle that would point towards the position it was in
when i bought my KDX i ran it bone dry several times before figuring out this is not how the KDX fuel tap is set up



all this to say that maybe JUST maybe you have had the fuel tap on reserve the whole time
trust me, you wouldnt be the first

I was wondering about that possibility too.
I seem to average around 20mpg, or close to 55 miles on a full tank.

What am I missing? It's only solved if he is riding with the handle in that position--thinking that he IS NOT using his reserve? Did he say that he rides with the handle in that position? Or did he simply answer the question put to him correctly? " When is the fuel tap in the reserve position?

Whatever----he seems to be satisfied.

I am a little surprised though by these reports of fuel milage. I've refilled my tank with less than 1 and a quarter gallons of gas after a 56 mile ride! I figure to go over a hundred miles on a tank? Do you guys just ride that much harder than I do or what?

Yeah, mileage has a lot to do with how aggressive you ride. When your just cruising along you obviously don't burn as much as when you are at a race pace. I know I am burning more fuel now as I have gotten to the point where I ride "on the pipe" most of the time. Still not bad mileage but a noticeable decrease on my KDX250.

I try to keep the bike "on the pipe" as often as possible. To me, a 2 stroke is meant to be screaming!!
