Is my chain too wide?

I just installed an X Ring 520 / 108 chain on my 01 KDX 200, and it barely fits through my FRP chain guide.

The chain measures just shy of 1 inch in width. The width of my chain guide is 1 inch.



In addition, the chain appears to be just slightly rubbing the case next to the counter sprocket.



Has anyone else had thses issues?

Could it be a problem with my install?

Do I just need a thinner chain?

Yep, when I had my bike, an o-ring chain would rub on the case behind the front sprocket. It actually cut a shallow groove all the way around, but once that was done, no more problems. The o-ring chain also wore corresponding grooves into the sides of the chain guard.

None of it is probably a big deal, but do keep a close eye on your master link, as the chain guard may wear it very thin, or even through it.

Yes, o-ring chain width is an issue with the KDX. Get a narrower chain, you do not want it chewing up your case, it will only get worse with sprocket, chain wear and mud. You can easily find narrower o-ring types to use.

I think it's D.I.D. that makes a narrow "T" ring chain specifically for bikes that were designed to run non o-ring chains. Kind of expensive though.

I am returning it tomorrow for a thinner one.

The 220's came with O ring chains stock. If you run a 220 chain guide it won't rub anymore.

wait... if it's rubbing on the case, how the hell is a new chain guide gonna help??

Is this a problem with 95+ bikes? My '90 has/had an O-ring and it didn't rub the case.

I wouldn't think so. The bottom end on the 200/220 are the same as far as I know, so if the o-ring chain fits the 220, it should fit the 200 if the chain guide is swapped? The whole "rubbing the case" thing is news to me. Never heard that before...

Maybe the countershaft sprocket has been swapped for one that is not a correct fit. (offset) I have run into that problem before.

Seems odd. I changed my '05 200 over to an x-ring chain last year. No case rubs. I did switch to the Fredette guide for clearance. The chain was from Rocky Mountain...primary drive brand.

I wonder if the collar that slips over the output shaft is somehow worn down?

He told me that some ring chains are too wide.

He is sending me one that is an X ring chain, but he says that it is a bit thinner, and wont be a problem.

The chain that I tried was a Primary Drive X Ring.
