01 CR125 Build

Post by Carone »

I thought I would start a build tread for my 01 CR125 hybrid. I purchased a CR roller half in boxes with a lot of extra parts. I also found a KDX 200 motor locally that ate up a piston. The motor is getting a full rebuild top and bottom end. While the motor is being build I cleaned up the bike and assessed what parts I needed.

I still need a pipe and silencer. I'm thinking about going with and FMF pipe (not sure about woods or desert, let me know what you think) because its going to need to be modified to clear the frame and I rather do it once to a performance pipe. I'm think about running a stock KDX silencer but I can't find one locally.

The bike came with an extra swing arm that I plan on using. Should I have the swingarm machined or cut it myself?

I need a few odds and ends as well. Rear tube, more than likely fork seals, levers (thinking about going flex), and number plate or head light.

Here are a few pictures of the roller. It cleaned up pretty well

Awesome. Can't wait to see the build! As far as the pipe, do you want it faster, or slower with more torque? That's your choice between desert/woods pipes.

The terrain around here (northern Nevada) is all high desert. The trail riding I do here isn't super tight woods but there aren't that many wide open runs either. Is there a preferred pipe for the 200?

hi, it depends on which pro circuit you're taking about.... the pro circuit platinum 2 is like the FMF gnarly woods (more torquey).....the other ones as far as i know improve the higher rpms, i love the low end rpms so i will buy (especially for a 200) a platinum 2 or a gnarly woods....but i'm a trail rider!

but if you ride on the desert i think that probably a gnarly desert (like the name says  ) will be ok too...

so it's up to you...if you search there will be a lot of discussions in the forum about these three pipes....

about the swingarm.......probably milling is the best thing to do....in a machine shop i don't think you will spend more than 20 dollars.....

don't know abou the silencer, im doing an hybrid too but with a '04 frame and i was thinkin' about keeping the cr 125 silencer (mine is a FMF Q spark arrestor) but i will got to check the diameters...don't know if they will match!!

sorry for my bad english, hope i helped you...

How easily does the kdx motor look like its going to fit in! i have a 89 kdx200 thats a healthy as motor, but everything else is fairly sad, and today a mate dropped a chain and smashed up the whole left housing on his 01 cr125 and is thinking of just floggin it rather than fixing it! look like there will be too much mucking around to bother?
Thanks!
89' kdx 200. Gold series Fmf pipe, renthal bars, EGO bark busters, 94' upside down fork conversion, re jetted carby.

Update

I got the motor into the frame and have everything test fit. The front most motor mount does not line up but I make a small bracket to get it bolted in. I'm running into a few other issues that other hadn’t with the swap. I had to grind down part of the radius of the swing arm to clear rear of the motor. I'm going to have to raise the radiators to clear motor. The pipe also hits the frame on its bend around the Y. I'm not sure how to fix this issue but I Plan on doing it last once everything else is in place. One other issue is that the peacock looks like it will be in the way of the upper radiator hose. I'm thinking about adding a remote petcock. Dose a fitting exist to replace the tank mounted petcock?

It looks like a lot happened between May '11 and now!

It looks good.

I'm not aware of any petcock adapter. You'll probably have to route the hose differently. Your local auto parts store has lots of hoses with different bends that can be cut up to fit. That fitting on the head can rotate 180 degrees, I believe

On the pipe you will probably have to cut the cylinder end off of your original pipe and weld it to your new pipe to get the extra length you need. I had to add two inches to mine. I was also using a '96 CR250 pipe, though, so your results will be different. I got lucky and between the larger CR expansion area and the increased length the pipe works really well.

I've really enjoyed my hybrid, the CR ergonomics are great. I did find the suspension really stiff at first but nothing lots of money could not fix.

Have fun!

You should be able to use the remote mounted petcock from either a CRF450 or CRF250. The fitting has the same bolt spacing at the tank mount as the CR but the petcock bolts to the frame. You will probably want to use one from an R model, the X models have a reserve which requires a tank fitting with 2 hoses suppling fuel to the petcock and would probably cause a clearence issue.
