'01 KDX200 resto, NoCal

Post by rtbmrgl »

I picked up a '01 KXD200 Jan-1, some good, some some not to bad.
Has new top end, dessert FMF pipe, new tires and a few accessories.
I think the PO power washed bike a lot, every bearing is bad.
Engine is coming out to paint frame and clean thing up.
So far repair list includes...
Water pump re-seal.
Front and rear wheel bearings.
Swing arm and shock linkage bearings.
Steering head bearings.
Chain and sprockets.
Carb rebuild.

Any suggestion are welcome.
I've already noticed quite a bunch of knowledgeable folks here.

Here's a few pics, will post more.

OK, scratched off paint must have been throwing me off.

That looks normal now on the close up.

HEHE, I guess going green these days has more then one meaning.

I found all of the shock linkage and swingarm bearings very rusty, like dust. Zerk fittings would be cool.
Also found coolant in the trans oil. If I looked over the bike more closely I may have not bought it.
I guess I got excited finding a KDX close, year and price I was looking for. One great thing about the KDX is a lot of support and available parts. :supz:
When i pulled the side cove off to replace the water pump seals, there was no sign of rust, so I'm guessing water leak had just started.
Oh well.
Getting the KIPS back in sync was easy too.

So far everything is going smooth, definitely enjoying working on the bike, wife likes it too, keeps me busy and out of her hair.
If you see anything I'm doing looks stupid, let me know, it wouldn't be the first time.

He rides around the property as fast as me.
I guess I'm not sure I'm saying he's fast or i'm slow, probably the latter.

Thanks,
yeah I put the kick stand on.
The shock is off and at a suspension shop, waiting for the results.
Shaft has some side to side play and he said some oil is lost from either a leak or leaking bladder. So not sure how worn the shock housing is.
I'll get the damage report in a few days.

Thanks,....... I admire a lot of the bikes I've seen on this forum.
For me its mostly peace of mind knowing whats going on with the bike, I don't like surprises. A lot of things were neglected on this bike.
A used motorcycle is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get. umm, that saying sounds familiar... :boogie:

Yeah, it really is. You can only look over so many things before you buy it. Eventually everyone develops an intuition though

Yes kdsully, very true, to tell the truth I hardly looked it over, I was just happy finding the year, price and had a pink slip.

In Calif if you just have a bill of sale, you have to make a trip to the CHP for vin inspection, A friend did that and found out the engine on his 73 CB750 was stolen back in the 80's. The CHP sent letters to the then owner and insurance company, they received no response so his impounded bike was returned.
My Bultaco slipped through CHP safely, someone ground off the vin and re-stamped it so it would match the engine number. They missed it. :naughty:

An '01 KDX is considered a modern bike but its still 20 years old.
My first bike I restored was a 65 Honda S90, I had good intuition about that bike but my wife said i should be institutionalized, there were no two pieces bolted together.

I've done frame up rebuilds on both my 200 and 220. The 220 was bone stock and completely unmolested. The 200 was bone stock but had a lot of neglect and a few Bubba repairs I had to fix.
I've seen bikes not even a year old have major Bubba mods and things messed up a regular Joe wouldnt notice. The only way you can know for sure you are getting a good bike is to buy one brand new from the dealership. Since the bikes I like aren't made anymore I have to go through them to know everything is good. It's worth the time, money and effort.

Yes javjacob, those infamous what the heck were you thinking repairs.

KDX is a great bike but I'm wondering what the future holds. A twin shock vintage bikes has several choices.
