Oil mix carb tune decision

Post by Omerojuniorv »

I just got a 97 kdx200 rebuilt, mechanic recomended amsoil dominator and to mix at 50:1, and i did, problem is i do not know what previous owner had it tuned for but i know he probably added more oil than that, so it is running rich and has a really hard time going into power band (have to hold throttle open for a while) so i decided to test if true and added more oil to the gas, and worked great, my question is should i just put more oil $$$ or should i tune the carb to 50:1 ratio which i would probably need your guys is help if i did.

You are out in the desert, running 50:1 on a carb you have not tuned?? Gamble much?!

Start at the pilot jet and air screw, then work your way up.

The tuning process is not difficult, just takes a bit of time and patience. You absolutely should do it rather than just add oil. Did the PO run 40:1, 32:1 20:1? Or did they just eyeball it and go? Best to know for sure, and a really good time to inspect everything in the intake/exhaust chain as well. Pick an oil and a ratio and an octane and jet to it.

Honestly i think they just eyeballed it that is why the engine locked up in the first place so i don't know how much they used, i don't know which jets to order it idles great even with 50:1 just won't rev over 1/2 way.

I run Amsoil Dominator 50:1 I started with stock jetting & tuned from there.
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Ditto, Amsoil @ 50:1, time! Never trust what the PO told you!

The only way to do it right is pick a ratio, stick to it, and jet the bike accordingly. Personally, I ride the desert and even during the hot months. I prefer 40:1 just for the added protection it provides when things get hot.

There's a reason you're hearing the same thing over and over...it works. The alternative is another engine rebuild possibly.

Probably way off the plate and may hijack this. but I still like 32:1 ( Yamalube or Power Punch).

Ps. I might have to give Kawi-lube a whirl now that old trusty has been sent to Alaska.

I have ran the Yamalube & Kawasaki 2T oils @ 32:1 for years without issue. They are great products.
