Here are the ones I know of.
Perry Lake- Topeka Area
Oakland Trails- Topeka Area
Otter Creek- John Redman Resevoir Burlington KS
But each one is at least an hour drive. Where the heck can a guy go ride some trails free or not around the metro. I'd like to be able to jump in my truck after work and just decide to go riding, spur of the moment.

There isn't anything closer than what you mentioned that I am aware of except for the Chicken Ranch which has a waiting list. If you have the time to get away there are better places to ride like Chadwick, Milford, etc. Our family paritcipates in the Forward Motion Hare Scramble races and many time they have events within an hour of KC. Fun times for sure.

Re: Where to ride around Kansas City
I have never been to Perry Lake and never heard of Oakland Trails before, would like to check them out sometime. It does suck for riding areas in the Kansas City Missouri/Kansas area. I haven't been to Chadwick since 1999 and really want to go back sometime. Another place is Finger Lakes. There is a small riding area approximately 50 miles from KC called Soggy Bottoms but I must warn that its heavily rutted from 4x4 utilty quads and side x sides.

I want to add another new riding area about 50 miles north of KC called South Big Creek Ranch. Nice trails.
