Texas riders New Lease at Mason, Tx Open House

Post by krazyinski »

New Lease at Mason, Tx Open House (Saturday, Sunday, Monday 26, 27, & 28 May)

Dirt Bikers of San Antonio (DBSA) (http://www.clubdbsa.org)

Contact is J.R.Rhoades (2007 DBSA Land Manager) Email jrleerh@sbcglobal.net

Free to DBSA club members. Non-DBSA riders are welcome and will be charged a fee of $10 per day per rider. Non-riders are free. Helmets are required and riding will be limited to the existing roads, one way marked trails, and cleared fence lines. If you go exploring off the beaten paths and get hurt, we'll never find you. However, the varmints will appreciate the free meal you've unwillingly provided to them. Camping is unimproved and free. Come up and check this place out. You won't be disappointed.

The DBSA Mason, Tx lease is a terrific unimproved (no water, electric, toilets, etc) 2000 acre property. DBSA members have now spent 2 full weekends putting in trails from scratch. We have a 3 mile beginner rider loop and about 8 miles of non-beginner rider loop.

Directions to the Mason property via IH10 West from San Antonio...
35 miles to US 87, exit right toward Fredericksburg. Follow US 87 thru Fredericksburg and continue 64 miles to Mason and the intersection of US 87 and Hwy 1871 (follow signs...you have to drive through city streets, Hwy 1871 will be a branch off to the left). In about 9 miles you'll cross the Llano river, and exactly 4 miles from that crossing, turn Left on Mill Creek Road. In 5.5 miles you'll reach the Gate to the property. The gate is on the left and will be marked with ribbon and will be left closed but unlocked. Parking/camp site is about a half mile up the ranch road.

1. There is a lot of cactus in places. There is also something that somebody referred to as 'Cats Claw'. This stuff has reverse hooks and likes to shred anything it touches. So slime in your tires or some other puncture resistant method would be a good idea.

2. Mason has lots of rocky valley and creek areas. Good armor for the body and bike is also a good idea.

3. There is a limit to vehicle/camper size that the property gate can accomodate. We managed to get an F250 with 28 foot trailer through but had just inches to spare. Be forewarned if you try to bring a 'behemoth' up.

4. The last bridge over the Llano River is single lane and only a couple of feet above the river.

5. Eat in the town of Mason at least one evening if you can. The Willow Creek cafe is worth the visit. Good food and excellent pie.

This is now 5 years old - how has this lease been running? We have been driving from Corpus all the way to Ft. Sam Houston for our fun - about 10-15 of us. Is this worth our time? Any other longer trail rides? (single track is our preference, but slightly wider is ok as well).
