Rocker Arm Bolt AAARRRGGGH!!!

Post by GOT WOODS? »

So I'm trying to service my rocker arm bearings and am finding it impossible to get the rocker-arm-to-frame bolt out. The way that it is sitting in the frame makes it impossible to get a direct hit on the bolt to drive it out. Anybody have this issue and found a good way to get this out? I'm thinking of heating both ends of the bolt up to get them to expand enough to maybe stretch the bolt hole in the bearing spacer and break the rust that is presumably holding the bolt in, then let it cool down and beat on it as well as I can. Anyone ever try this? Anything to watch out for? Thanks!

If you are meaning swingarm bolt, lay the bike on its side and spray the bolt with penetrating oil. Let it sit overnight then hit with a brass punch and hammer, if you get some movement lay the bike on its other side, and repeat the process, keeping doing this until you work it free. Heating the bolt will do nothing as the rust is at the swingarm sleeve, bearing, and swingarm bolt, the heat won't penetrating that far

I think he's meaning one of the bolts that go through the 39007 UNI TRAK suspension arm. It's been awhile since I did mine, but don't recall having any problems.

Penetrating oil and patience usually works

use heat if you can, or get an open end wrench on it and hit it with a rubber mallet after applying some penetrating lube.

I just dealt with this yesterday. Mine was really seized (not my fault I swear - I just bought it!). After removing the lower chain roller guide, I put a shallow impact socket on a 25" Harbor Freight breaker bar on the left (bolt head) side, and a box wrench on the right (nut) side. Came right off.
