lift stands for working on your bike

Post by bws2 »

As I'm get older, I find I'm having trouble working on my bike while sitting on the garage floor.

I'm considering a motorcycle lift stand, but don't have a lot of extra space in the garage. I've seen the scissor type
stands, but am not sure how well they'd work with a KDX200.

Do any of you have suggestions on a stand that could help get me into a better working position?

Have you tried a mechanic's roller chair?

Thank you, KDX. I hadn't thought of that and it's a lot better option than sitting/kneeling on the floor.

It rolls around and elevates to adjust height

It has worked well for me for years. Mine is the older model with a red seat.

Here's another one:

I am a Sears fan, so am familiar with that brand.

EDIT add-on:

I am too old to be stooping down and sitting on the floor, though it seemed to work well when my back and knees did not complain.

The cheapie floor mats from Harbor Freight have worked out well for me, also. When I do have to stoop down, it keeps the knees happier. Also, bolts and washers don't run off as well.

bws2, if you think motorcycles will be in you life for quit awhile I would suggest a Motorcycle lift. I got one when I bought a Goldwing in '05, a very good investment. I have a fairly beefy one with side extension. , I think it holds 1200lbs. If a light motorcycle or dirt bikes is what you have Harbor Freight has one. The HF has wheels, plus if space is a concern you can park the bike on the lift.

I have one of the pit posse (I think that’s the brand) scissor lift plus a mechanics rolling seat. They both work great and that lift will put your bike way up there and it has wheels. If you get one, roll the bike around while it’s close to the ground. The higher the bike is, the less comforting it is to try and spin or push it around.

Thank you John and everyone for responding. I'm seriously considering the scissor lift and mechanics seat.

Hey John, can you tell me how tall your stand is at its lowest height setting?

Just looked it up. The advertisement claims it goes from 13 - 36”. On my bike (02 220 with a Hyde skid plate) you can roll it underneath with about 1/4” to spare and then lift from there. No lifting the bike up onto it. They sell them with and without the wheels. In my opinion the wheels make it. Especially if you have the wheels or suspension off the bike. Just push it up against a wall when you’re done working on it and pull it back out when you’re ready.

I just lifted it all the way. It puts the top of the footpeg at 38" and the left grip at 65". I love having it! I picked it up,as a used floor model in a dealership. Ive had it a few years.

I forgot to mention an important and annoying thing. The way the KDX frame is it lifts the rear way higher than the front. I wrapped a 1x4 block of wood in shelf liner (non slip) and use it to level the bike up. This picture is a terrible example because the stand is way too far forward and the block is pressing up against the pipe. Usually I have it where the pipe is clear of the stand and the block stays put while wrenching on it. A wedge shaped piece would be better.

That's what I thought too at first. It has clamps that hook onto your footpegs and lock it in. They're hanging there in the picture but not clamped on. Typically I only raise it half that high to work on it. It's steady unless you attempt to roll the bike when it's up high. I tried that...once! Didn't knock it over but it all it would take is a pebble on the floor.

I have the same lift as John_S except it's blue. Works great. Amazon had the lowest price.
