Is this used Reed Valve assembly worn out?

Post by '03KDX200 »

Hey I have this carbon fiber Moto Tassinari reed valve that came with my bike. I haven't installed it yet, but upon close inspection this thing has some wear/fraying showing at the edges of some of the reeds. My question is how bad of wear is this? How much life does this reed valve have left in it? How long do carbon fiber reed valves usually last anyways? How much damage would it do to the engine to get tiny particles of carbon fiber and bits of epoxy resin sucked through? Thanks guys.

P.S. Due to this forum's excellent help, my steering head bearing/races job is going really well. Thanks so much. I'm doing a write-up soon.

I’ve seen much worse. First off, if you gotta ask, replace it for peace of mind. You should really be looking inside to see if light passes through the opening (from the pictures the reeds look flush to the body). As far as the carbon getting in the engine, that stuff doesn’t seem to burn very well. Now sure if it would damage the plating, but I definitely wouldn’t want it getting in the big or small end bearings.

I would replace. With that much wear I would be concerned a larger piece might break off and I don't really know what that might do. Can't imagine anything good though.

They're starting to come apart. Replace them.

If they were mine, I would replace them. Carbon fiber chips might not be good to have in an engine spinning around 150 times per second.

Wow! I hadn't thought of rpm like that. That's 9000 rpm which isn't out of the realm of possibility at all if you are hard on the gas. To get a feel for it say out loud "one thousand one".............Your engine just went up and down 150 times! Amazing machines!

Yes, another reason to not use LOWEST BIDDER brand bearings. Yes, it's "just a trail bike", but there is A LOT going on all at one time.

A KDX will do 10 K, but that is not where peak power is.

Smart move as I would also definitely replace. They may still be sealing at this point (if you can't see light when looking from the inside out) but they are coming apart and I would NOT trust them. They will just lead to more problems and thus headaches if left alone.
