1st Time KDX owner !!!! 2001 KDX 220r

Post by kvkdx »

So I bought my first KDX (sold my 09 KTM 300) and bought 2001 KDX 220r to "build" into a Colorado single track beast.....and so far Im LOVING this bike, I swear its very similar (I think Beta studied the KDX when making the Xtrainer Beta) to the Beta Xtrainer bike, Its so amazingly nimble and grunty for colorado hard enduro and single track.

2001 KDX 220r
upgrades so far:
Gearing: Frnt 13 / rear 50, geared a little low but very well for my climbs and single track slow stuff, I can crawl
Stealthy Flywheel 10+ weight added and really helps down low and slow, w very little clutch work, this bike does NOT stall
FMF gnarly pipe (RIPS and sounds great - added a lot of low end torque)
FMF silencer to match
steel braided brake lines
upgraded brake internals while doing brakes
LECTRON carb (just installed and HOLY COW did it turn my bike into a ripping torquey 250 feeling machine, My KDX pulls a wheelie from a dead stop in 4th gear punching the throttle, yes you heard me correct, holy cow)
open air box and UNI filter
going with as much white plastics and graphics as I can afford , just to be different
Tusk hybrid (shinko cheater 505) tire rear, Front the Shinko F546 90w up front, super stable and grippy tires
still stock Reeds, but bike runs amazing so not worried yet
Want to upgrade Clutch at some point: Tusk HD or better???? (when money allows)
Obviously all new stuff: renthal chain, chain guards, caliper guard, new hand guards, any New peices I can afford and install

How do I upload pics?? and Ill do it ? thanks peeps, glad to be a KDX guy now , I ride w all KTM and BETA older 60s dudes and they are fast, technical rippers and they respect my GREEN

WOW! Nice bike. I've never heard of anyone adding a flywheel weight to a KDX; gotta' make it really grunt! Only have one suggestion...
Suspension. Get it dialed in for your weight and typical riding and check that sag.
Oh, I do't see a skid plate. Might want to consider that especially if you're doing any rock or log crawling.

Yes, yes and Yes, Ive got teh engine running and idling like a dream, and your right ( I raced quads and always upgraded to race tech springs and OH MY what a difference) We have a Pro old timer Ron in the mountains that is a suspension whisperer and Is my next upgrade, I plan to keep the stock setup as Im 5'10" and 180lb but I want him to new fluid, valves if needed and setup for me, Ive heard this will make a great differrence as well, the suspension has been GREAT off road and on single track I can easily pop logs and roots and rocks etc, I have noticed it feeling like it wants to bottom out when I jump or pop off a ledge, Its not as bad as an actuall bottom out per se but it doesnt feel good. and yes, your right the 70$ skid plate will go on soon as well, thanks and Ims toked to have a KDX

I would say the fly wheel weight made it rev the way I wanted a single track bike to be, it really doesnt want to stall which is great and it lugs like a KTM so yes I LOVE the flywheel effect

SO stoked to be riding a KDX:

2001 KDX 220r
FMF gnarly desert pipe
matching FMF powercore 2 silencer (sounds great)
Tusk pipe guard
10+ oz stealthy flywheel weight, bike chugs and does not want to stall ever
LECTRON 34mm carb (no jets and really woke up the low end and overall power)
Rear tire: Tusk hybrid cheater (shinko tire) 110/110-18
frnt tire: Shinko f546 soft 90w
galfer blue steel braided lines
Renthal sprockets: 13//50 geared
X-ring gold chain
New" petcock, radiator cap, brake caps w new diaphrams, new brake pads
Bark busters
ROX 2" bar risers
UNI AIRFILTER
gripper black seat
case saver

this bike rips and hangs with all my colorado single track Beat / KTM friends (for a lot less cash)

If you are looking for white plastics, the 1999 model had white radiator shrouds. Good luck finding them. I believe the OEM part numbers are 49089-5315-6F and 49089-5316-6F.
