Hey! TTR230 to KDX 200; Upgrade?

Hey Y'all. I have been riding only for a few months as I recently got into the sport. I currently have a 2014 ttr230 and am going to look at a 2001 KDX 200 this weekend as an upgrade from the ttr.

I like the ttr but I feel too big for the bike. It was a great bike to learn to ride on and while I am still learning, I feel more comfortable/confident now and I feel like I cannot ride to my full potential due to its smaller size. Im 5'11'' and 180 lbs. sitting down on the bike feels okay but the suspension is lacking. Standing up gets me fatigued quickly because then I feel too tall and constantly leaning over. Do you guys think that a kdx 200 would fit me better and would be a good 2nd bike? I ride single track and woods trails.

Thanks!

Haha! You’re looking for someone HERE to say a KDX would NOT be a good bike for woods and trail riding??
I’m about your same size and ride/race a KDX 220. It fits me well. You’ll want to fit the suspension to suit your size and riding ability, etc on any bike to get the most out of it. I’d say a KDX is hard to beat, especially for the money. I do think it will become your primary not your secondary ride though. They kinda grow on ya’.

LOL. I guess I was more asking if anyone thought it wouldn't suit my needs being that I am still a beginner. But thanks for the reply. I plan on selling my TTR if I do in fact buy the KDX. It seems to be in pretty great shape and owned by a friend of a friend.

It’ll be a learning curve being a two stroke. You’ll get the hang of it

Welcome and good luck. I bet the KDX will feel much lighter and more nimble on the trails compared to your TTR.

The KDX is a far superior off road bike than the TTR.

Welcome to kdxrider.net.

Congratulations on getting into off-road riding.

I rode a TT-R230 a few times. Though quite nice for a tall beginner adult, after a while, the power level and suspension can hold one back from getting better or more easily enjoying somewhat tougher terrain.

A KDX200 or KDX220R would be a great next step up from a TT-R230. The suspension is a fair bit better. There is also more power, but not a tremendous amount of power that would be uncontrollable.

Thanks for all the replies! I feel more confident this could be the next bike for me. Looking forward to checking it out/riding it this sunday. A friend of a friend is selling it and my friend tells me it is in great condition. The seller actually is busy this weekend but he is dropping the bike at my friend's place for me to see it/ride it so that will be nice that I wont be pressured by the seller being there haha.

KDX looks nice. I predict once you start riding the KDX you'll sell the TTR. No real comparison to the TTR on how fun the KDX is.

That looks like a nice bike. I think you'll love it compared to the TTR. Around here (Florida) the days of finding a nice one for $1500 seem to be gone. I see ones that I would describe as crap for over $1000. The going rate is more in the $2000-2200 range for a nicer example.

When you look at the price of new bikes...paying 2000 or even 2500 for a great bike like the KDX is a bargain to me. I paid 1500 for mine and have put about another 1500 into it with suspension swap, new carb, top end, etc etc I don't regret it one bit. I love that bike!!!

It is hard to say with tiny pics, but real nice ones are priced around $2,000 here in northern AL.

I purchased my 95 KDX 200 for $1700, 9/3/19. And thought I did well.
It has legal kit and some other goodies installed.
But I am very sure mine has been used hard for it’s intended purpose, before coming to me for some more clobbering.
If all that plastic is original, it appears the one you are considering has lead a much easier life than mine.
I think $2k is fair price if all’s well, and could probably be convinced up to $2300 or so, depending on compression, KIPS check, & a good test ride.
PS. You might ask how did they fix that big dent that comes free with every woods pipe?

Maybe a good body guy can take them out? The metal isn’t that thick, and maybe some heat and a dent puller can get a lot of it out. I’m not speaking from experience though. I’ve heard it’s possible.

Not every bike has a big dent in it. :-)

My welder son said he would cut the dent out, weld a round patch, then polish it all out. Carbon build up inside the pipe has to be cleaned out.
Buying a new pipe looks like a good idea.
Value for a 200 I've seen is about $2000.

Welcome to the forum! You are going to love the KDX and keep a smile on your face all day.

An excellent condition H-series KDX can fetch around $2500 out here in CA. One that hasn't been treated to well can be had for under $1500.

You're welcome.

Post some big pictures if you want us to see some detail to point out any issues with it that can be seen.
