Recently found & bought an 03 220 in decent condition. I'll be hanging around searching for info & advice. Happy to be back in the dirt, soon.

Welcome to kdxrider.

Would you care to mention where in east Alabama you are? I am northeast.

Thanks.

WOW! I am pretty close to Noccalula Falls. Cool!

Be sure to read up on the OEM piston. There are tons of other tips on here.

Enjoy the KDX!

Welcome to the forum. Being in Oxford, you should try Top Trails in Talladega. There is a 12 mile long single track that goes through all the other riding areas. It is worth the drive from Oxford, not so much from Cedar Bluff for me. Highland Park is very well worth the drive. Enjoy the forum!

Im going top trails just to play around. There's usually a bunch of partygoers (I'm told) on side by sides to avoid.
Going to get a piston next month if it hasn't been swapped already but how will I know for sure?
What am I looking for?
Haven't had a smoker since early 80s.

Welcome and congrats on that 03 220. You're going to enjoy it for sure. I just picked up an 04 220. I spent 2 years in Meridian MS, which by Texas standards is just down the road from you. The Meridian Motorcycles Association (MMA) has a really cool riding park with a lot of single tracks that goes through woods and hills. I only saw ATV's (no sideXsides) on some of the wider trails and that wasn't very often. I know what you mean about those knucleheads on Side X Sides. Way too much power for someone without common sense to operate. To me they are a menace and pose a real danger on trails. I come across them when I go to AZ to visit my youngest son and his family. LIke you said it's the young partiers that have no trail etiquette.

How about a picture or two of your bike!
NEVER FORGET!

There are several threads on here over the years. Hopefully, the pics are still there. One quick way to take a partial look is to take the exhaust pipe off and look inside the cylinder. If it has a lot of blow by, you can just go ahead and replace it, as it has worn rings for a while.

Otherwise, borescope.

Obviously, taking the head off means a new head gasket, as they are not to be reused.

Congrat son the new bike and welcome to the forums. As mentioned, borescope in the plug hole if its not too carboned up, otherwise the only real way is to pull the head.

Through the exhaust, the piston doesn't look like forged al, looks cast. Has 150psi compression. Im going to replace it (after closer inspection) in a couple of months. Kips is working, trying to get this smoker tuned, making progress, been a while since I fooled with one of these.

It's been a while since I've been on. My KDX has been parked since I've went back to school, moved a few times, changed jobs a few times, and what not. Now I'm all settled in, I'm giving my bike a bit of a face lift. I'm in Oxford, too. I plan on hitting Kentuck when I get done. I went to top trails a couple years back on a crf450x. I didn't hit the single track and that was a big mistake. Definitely a steep and gutted out place with all side by sides. Riding that big 4 stroke was a mistake, too. 🤣
